Down near the Carillion there are a couple of maritime memorials. Here’s a picture I took of the memorial to the first HMAS Canberra, lost in the Battle of Savo Island in 1942. Having walked past the memorial numerous times it took a new walking companion to point out that the whole memorial is shaped like a ship.

HMAS Canberra Memorial

Historical footnote; in honour of Canberra’s actions at Savo Island, the US Navy named one of their own heavy cruisers the USS Canberra. The only ship in the history of the US Navy to be named after a foreign capital. (note to ACT Tourism, 30th anniversary of her striking from the naval register is in 2008, get together with her vet’s association and you could get a lot of cashed up old Americans in town)

Agreed, Kerces. The anchor says it all.

Well terubo, it’s a scuplture. It only has to have the essence of shipness to be regarded as one.

-er, sort of. A tugboat, perhaps, or a dredger….but interesting nonetheless. The dog thought so, too.
