Images of Canberra - when kids are bored and cops can't be bothered

I don’t quite know what to make of today’s article in the CT about the increasing Gungahlin police beat. After initially being horrified at the notion that they had quiet times, I came to the realisation that the article is actually an excuse for the lack of action here in Gungahlin.

Here’s what happens in Gungahlin when kids are board and when the police are twiddling their thumbs on quiet nights.

These are from a segment of the Palmerston floodway/nature reserve, all within an area of about 200 square metres:

null null null null null null null

And of course, the creme de la creme.

The justification for all of it…

null

Cultural enrichment by boring, mindless, stupid tagging!

I can handle, and even appreciate graffiti where it’s artistic.

Apparently this group of kids don’t have a shred of artistic talent between them.

Apparently the police, who have been notified of this, are too busy with traffic stops and petrol thefts.

And apparently you can buy a dozen cans of spray paint and no one at the hardware store cares…

Gungahlin population = around 50,000
Police cars patrolling = one or two

And you wonder why petty crime isn’t being nipped in the bud?

I’m quite impressed that they spelt ‘cultural enrichment’ correctly! They may be dumb arses to think that graffiti is ‘good” but at least they can spell correctly!

The taggers are better spellers than the OP.

If you catch them and beat the f*** out of them, they won’t do it again

Let’s hope the police take the same approach to you when the kids you beat the f*** out of report you.

Living in Ngunnawal is starting to be like living in a ghetto – Since I have lived here for several years the graffiti keeps growing – The tagging of fences along side roads looks disgusting – Unfortunately the ACT government will do nothing to remove graffiti – Just look at the Ngunnawal shops Sign – I guess it is little wonder that the shops have been held up at least 4 times and the DVD shop closed down for this reasoned – Makes me wonder why I pay taxes for ??? If kids can get away with tagging public and private property what will they try next – I wish there was something that could be done about graffiti removal.

Planking?

Kids these days need an older school style of planking.

I agree that tags are lame and stupid, but as long as it’s not racist epithets or the like I don’t really give a crap about graffiti. Tagging like this is probably literally the least notable or response worthy crime possible, and it hurts no-one. It annoys people, aggravates those that idolise aesthetics, but it doesn’t actually harm anybody.

So is the OP familiar with the saying, they have to be successful only once, we have to be successful every time.

It only takes a couple of minutes to do a tag, Police can’t be everywhere so perhaps focus you’re anger on those who actually perpetrate the crime.

I would, but I cant find them. When police have been notified and are in today’s paper discussing how quiet things sometimes are – and when this is happening every Friday night, which they also know, I don’t think the occasional drive-by is unreasonable.

Bare in mind that these are only the photos that I could be bothered walking to for the purpose of this whinge – without seeing it, you can’t possibly understand the cesspool that Palmerston has become. The school, the shops, the bus stops, private fences, and anyone unfortunate enough to have a wall that can be reached from outside their fence.

If the ACT Govt isn’t going to fund the police to take care of it, they could at least quit with the excuse that the outside of the fence (on the “council side”) is still private properly, and thus won’t be addressed by Fix My Street.

i doubt the quiet periods are ever on friday night.

As for the original post, i hardly consider taking drunk drivers off our roads a waste of resources either. Im sorry but the tags fall a fair bit behind saving peoples lives

We been over this before. Tagging is the most pointless, unartistic and talentless form of graffiti.

Stiff?

Planking?

You’re complaining that police are too busy with petty crime, but you want them to spend time investigating this petty crime?

If you catch someone “tagging”, remove their spray can from them, and tag them with it. Several times. Make sure to tag their hair.

$200,000 plus the cost of the Segway

Yes… I second the notion. Lets fund a full-time police presence in the “floodway/nature reserve” at a triffling cost of only, say, an additional couple of hundred thousand dollars a year.

Money well spent, especially as the offenders, if caught, will receive such substantial and meaningful punishment.

The “Cultural Enrichment” one is actually pretty funny. Tagging, of course, is something only a complete douche canoe would do.

I’m not really sure what you expect of the Police though? There are rather a lot of fences in Canberra. Do you want them to watch them all, all the time?
