Impactednurse shut down.

On Tuesday Ian Miller’s blog impactednurse.com together with his Twitter entry were removed due to problems with his employer (The Canberra Hospital).

The blog had attracted more than 2000 subscribers worldwide and was universally praised for its informative advice to the nursing profession and for its skilled and compassionate attitude to the profession.

As such it must have reflected positively on the Emergency Dept at TCH and one is left wondering what sort of pressure was brought to bear to have the page censored so conclusively.

I am sure that many many of his followers are upset at this action and would like to voice their feelings but alas there is now no forum to do so.

Perhaps there are some local nurses who would like to take up the issue through these pages?

Dude – I’m in love with you! I just managed to use the wayback link to download 4 pdfs of (then) unpublished work by my favourite author!!

Hi all,
Ian Miller here (aka impactednurse).
A heartfelt thankyou to everyone who has had something encouraging or constructive to say on this (or the ‘corker from impactednurse’) post.

For the record: I was not ‘forced’ to close down impactednurse. But it did become a very wise thing to do.
I will continue to dip my thoughts in ink on non medical related stuff over at wobblewax.com.

To those who have in the past made defamatory, and derogatory comments about my professionalism or capability as a nurse from behind their shields of anonymity, I invite you to step out of the shadows and repeat them.

And to ‘waiting for godot’…..thats MR (or even SISTER) bozo to you.

Sorry to hear it’s gone. I’m sure Ian will put his skills and experience to something else, equally as popular.

This is a loss.
And sadly, not everything is in the Internet Wayback Machine Archive.

“BWAAAAAAHAHAAHHHAAAAA”

Yeah but I’m guessing, this time he wasn’t threatened with physical violence …

BWAAAAAAHAHAAHHHAAAAA.

It is a real shame that Ian’s site was shut down, it was a great resource to nurses all over the world. I know I have learnt from what Ian has posted, and responses from nurses from around the world. He never breached confidentiality, and some discussions were started in response to issues in nursing around the world. Considering that his site was recommended to uni students, and was followed by nurses at all levels worldwide, having the blog shutdown will be a real loss.

Ian, I wish you well, and will miss reading what you have to say.

It was shut down for what reason? Apologies for my ignorance. If they had issue with him being an employee of the ACT PS then he could have handed it over to someone else perhaps. But I cant see how the ACT Govt can shut down a site without having some very very compelling reasons.
Maybe I am missing something here. Or is this proving that our concept of ‘free speech’ doesnt exist in this country (and Im pretty sure it doesnt as we dont have a bill of rights, and the constitution is something that only gets mentioned when the govt of the day is about to ignore it)

Nursing is rife with bullying… I was first put onto that Impacted Nurse site through a colleague… overseas! It took a while for me to work out that it was actually being written right here in Canberra. It had a very wide readership, I’ve seen stories on it linked on sites and publications all over the world. The Health online publication 6 Minutes often quoted from it. http://www.6minutes.com.au/

This is a serious loss.

I gotta say that I’m shocked, saddened, and not the least bit surprised by The Canberra Hospital’s/ACT Health’s interference with an absolutely cracking website. Ian is a mentor to many and if the s*it hit the fan and I had to go the ED I would definitely want Ian as my nurse. He was controversial yes, but always fair, balanced, and above all, told the TRUTH about people, patients, and healthcare. TCH’s executive doesn’t like nurses having a voice. Just another example of the institutionalised bullying and harassment perpetuated by people that should never have been in health care in the first place.

Im sad to hear Impacted Nurse is no longer. If you havent nursed, you would possibly not understand the pressures nurses work and live with and the lack of support available to those in the profession, let alone the lack of monetary appreciation for a hard job, burnt out nurses dont get much help from their employers, if you aren’t of use anymore, you are on your own in many ways. Impacted nurse was a place nurses could debrief, discuss issues and share ideas, confidentiality was not an issue as patients were not identifiable. As I have said previously on Riot Act, Impacted Nurse encouraged me through both the crazy, funny and dark times in nursing, so THANK YOU IAN for sticking your neck out for the benefit of others, your fellow nurses, benefiting nurses benefits patients in the long run.

Caring has its cost, it seems that it has come at a cost to Ian Miller.

I really want to read the “things found in fat rolls” but it’s gone.

Is that the bozo who gave detailed accounts of his patients including items found in their rolls of fat, a direct breach of nurse/patient confidentiality?

You seem unusually upset about his, is there something you’d like to share with us?

If so, the only thing remarkable about the closure of his blog and Twitter account is that it didn’t happen much sooner.

The next step should be drumming him out of the nursing profession and ensuring he never again works in health services or any other industry where he has access to personal information about others.

This was all debated moths ago in these pages and the overwhelming opinion was in favour of “the bozo”. Comments like yours show a pathetic misunderstanding.

Confidentiality is only breached if the patients or clients are identifiable from the account disclosed.

They were not.

Your point is not valid.

Big shame indeed, hopefully he will bounce back as has happened before. Maybe a bit of public pressure on the guvmnt to let him open it up again (and for good) might do the trick?

Well i found a copy of the e-book he released.

27 pages, opens to pdf/google docs

That is very bad news indeed. A LOT of people read that blog, there was some really juicy info in it. What a damn shame.
