Inadequate planning for asbestos remediation and removal at Yarralumla Brickworks

The YRA is concerned that current ACT Government plans for clearing up asbestos and other contamination at the Canberra Brickworks in Yarralumla are inadequate and vastly underestimate the costs. We understand that the plans are not fully consistent with the regulatory framework that applies to contaminated sites, in particularly asbestos, in the ACT. The YRA issued a press release on June 2 at http://www.yarralumlaresidents.org.au/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/YRA-Media-release-2-June-2014.pdf

We also strongly support the online petition posted by local resident Katherine Wilkinson that asks the ACT government to provide comprehensive health and safety reports for Yarralumla Brickworks asbestos remediation. Her petition can be signed at http://chn.ge/1ntY1MT

We have been advised that in response to Katherine Wilkinson’s efforts the ACT Government has agreed to put a health and safety report about the Yarralumla Brickworks asbestos remediation on the TAMS website.

We will let you know when the health and safety report is available.
This is definitely a step in the right direction.

The online petition can still be signed at: http://chn.ge/1ntY1MT
