Increase in local ALP membership

The Labor Party ACT branch has attracted 200 new members since the polls disaster 7 months ago, according to the Canberra Times.

This comes amidst ongoing debate over the requirement to be a Union member in order to join the party.

Unions ACT secretary, Kim Sattler, has understandably been critical of the talks, keen to keep Union membership as a requirement.

I must admit I was surprised when this was raised by Mr Shorten for discussion recently in a bid to increase ALP membership Nationally. Not being a member of a party, I wasn’t aware of the rule.

What’s your take on it? Do you think it’s time for Labor to do away with the rule on Union membership, or do they need to stick to their union roots?

I know it’s probably naive, but if it were a genuine increase it would be great. All the established parties need some serious renewal, and let’s face it, there’s not much point with anyone other than the ALP in Canberra.

Well The Greens almost won Zed’s senate seat at the last election…

Correct me if i’m wrong but didn’t the Greens vote go backwards last time? Like if you like at the quota scored just by each party then the Greens lost votes. They went from 0.68 of a quota in their own right down to 0.57. That as close as the Greens will get in the ACT. Can we just admit that nothing will change in the ACT Senate seats and move on with it all. Even with the local Libs killing themselves and a high profile candidate the Greens couldn’t score a seat.

This is true and there has been a number of people coming in off the street to join because they are scared of what Abbott and Co will really do when they get going. They have realised that the Labor Party is addressing need whereas the Coalition is addressing greed.

Surprised? Not really. Probably a good thing to get regular people out there getting involved. I’m more surprised there is an Army person who votes Labour Johno 🙂 Although I believe there may have been a sapper in Townsville who voted Labour once 🙂

Have they checked the new members names against the headstones in the local cemetry? Is Snowball 1 now an ALP member?

My thoughts exactly. Must be a branch stack on.

Office bearers be afraid, be very very afraid.
