The Molonglo Catchment Group is organising an Indigenous tour of Mount Ainslie as part of World Environment Day (June 4th)
As you would be aware thousands of people walk up and around Mt Ainslie each year but don’t know they are actually walking past significant Aboriginal occupation sites.
The tour will be lead by elders from the Ngunawal Community and Field Experts from the Molonglo Catchment Group.
We are keen to organise a photo opportunity before the tour to let people know that the event is on.
There has been a great deal of public interest in Indigenous issues of late however much of the interest has focused on negative aspects of indigenous life in remote communities. I think many people in the Canberra community would be interested in hearing about the area’s Indigenous heritage and learn how to spot traces of Aboriginal occupation.
If you are interested, we could set up a great photo opportunity with a Ngunawal elders on sites at Mt Ainslie.
Here are the details for the guided walk.
What: 2 hour Aboriginal occupation on Mount Ainslie
When: 10:00am, Sunday June 4th
Why: World Environment Day
How: The tour will be lead by Heather Colman and assisted by Ngunawal elders and a field experts from the Molonglo Catchment Group.
Who: The tour is for people living in Canberra who want to know more about the area’s Indigenous history. Participants will learn how to find and identify Aboriginal occupation sites so that future bushwalks in the Canberra region become more enjoyable.
