Infrastructure Report Card for the ACT

I can’t believe no one has commented in this thread??

Come on, Canberrans… The state of our infrastructure is important to you and I. And think of the children. 🙂

Anyway, my 2c worth, for what it’s worth.

Scorecard (rated A~F)
– Gas A-
– Road B
– Airport B-
– Drinking Water B-
– Electricity B+
– Telecommunication B-
– Stormwater C+
– Sewerage C+
– Rail F

Rail? In Canberra? Where? 😉

The first thing to slip, judging from the high density residential building that is popping around town, is the road. To accommodate increased flow of traffic from these new residential complex they are installing traffic lights at the darnest of places (e.g. Wakefield Ave, Ainslie).

Gas? This is probably because almost all new residential buildings in Canberra deliberately omit gas piping, as it is an additional plumbing cost and ‘hurts’ the bottom-line of the developers.

Airport? Bah. The only time Canberra airport can appear inadequate is when there’s a mad rush of journos, lobbyists, and politicians in to or out of Canberra. At all other times it’s a breeze going through the airport. And don’t talk to me about the possibility of having a Jumbo fly low over my head.

Electricity… Wonder if the blackouts in Bruce have been taken into consideration when they gave it the score.

(Recommendations)
setting aside corridors for mass transport routes and intercity high speed rail.
A… what?? Like, a bullet train??

Prevent the simultaneous implementation of multiple projects that cause significant disruption to users
And it happened again on weekend last…

Place a higher priority on flood prevention when upgrading stormwater systems.
Never seen a flood in Canberra…

Develop a long-term rail vision for both within Canberra and between Canberra and other Australian cities.
I mean, really… We DO NOT have the critical mass to make this viable as a public transport within Canberra.

Address broadband blackspots to ensure quality broadband services are universally available.
We’re pitching our hope on NBN… But this is one major oversight in Canberra infrastructure. It’s a joke when Inner north suburb residents can not get bb.

The Australian Government to provide a level of planning attention and infrastructure funding for Canberra that recognises its national significance.
As a Canberran, I suddenly feel important… 🙂
