The ACT Department of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water have organised an Inner North Community Fair on Sunday 16 May, 11am til 3pm, at Hawdon Oval in Dickson.

Apart from having a great time and seeing what else happens in our local community to support the environment, they’d like people to check out the proposed wetlands development in Dickson.

The clothes swap will be fun, and Playdates for the Planet are running a recycled craft competition and story-telling for the kids. You can enjoy organic food, listen to local music thanks to the Canberra Musicians Club, see great local designers and entertainers, recycle stuff, check out eco-friendly lifestyle options, and you could even win prizes for riding your bike to the event!

Let me see: its clear, informative, tells me what I need to know, uses readable font. So, whats the problem? This is the inner north, you know, we (inner northies) are all highly educated and not swayed by the latest trendy font in mysterious colours that tries to look hip. We are hip, we dont need posters to tell us that.

Oh, and really its aimed at parents of young children (too tired to try to decipher community aesthetic posters) and retired people (can’t see well enough to decipher).

(in the spirit of the original commentator. I have nothing to do with the ‘fair’, although the one they held in O’Connor to advise of the wetland developments was quite interesting, even for this aesthiest greenie. Although the watertank guy still hasnt contacted me to give a quote)

Given that most of the community groups participating in the event don’t have the time or funds to produce posters and flyers, I’m quite happy with what the ACT Govt has done.

Look what happens when a govt department thinks it can hijack the term “community”. Sorry to be mean, but I’ve never seen such a banal, wooden, uninviting poster in ANY community event context! Great idea, ACT Govt clerks, but “community fair” it ain’t by the LOOK of it! Check out the ACT Library ephemera collection for community-aesthetic poster inspiration…
