Andrew Barr is rather pleased that international visitors are turning towards Canberra:

Growth in the number of international visitors coming to the capital for a holiday and to visit family and friends has contributed to a 6.4 per cent annual increase in international visitation to Canberra.

This figure compares with a 5.2 per cent increase in international visitation nationally, based on data for the year ending September 2013.

Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey (IVS) released today revealed there were 179,416 international visitors to the ACT over the 12 month period, up from 168,568 for the same period last year.

The survey also indicated that international visitors to Canberra spent a total of $361 million in the city.

The biggest increase came from visitors from Singapore/Malaysia/Thailand/Hong Kong with a 21.4% increase over the year.

International visitors can hardly wait until they will be able to catch a tram to Canberra’s most important and exciting tourist destination…Gungahlin.

There’s a few minor facilities on the Northbourne/Flemington route: EPIC, Race track, Tinys green Shed and a new hotel/camping facility being planned between Flemington Rd and the Federal Highway.

That, with our new high-rise blocks of flats, and we’ll be up there with New York City in no time!

Imagine a comedy sketch titled ‘The Tram Stop’ modelled on Monty Python’s ‘The Cheese Shop’. Instead of a customer seeking all the cheese that isn’t in the cheese shop insert a visitor to Canberra boarding a tram and trying to reach a tourist destination of national (or any other) significance.

Ok, let’s see if I’ve got my maths right?

International visitors in Aus up 5.2%

International visitors to Canberra up 6.4%

In the year of our centenary skywhale hipster celebrations, we managed to up the international visitors numbers by 1.2%

How much did we spend again?

Better hope this new logo brings the international sightseers in then.[/sarcasm]
