Irrelevant bollocks to rule in ACT Education

The Canberra Times reports that, not content with their previous efforts, the ACT Curriculum Renewal Consultative Committee has had a further stab at driving more families into private education with a new curriculum which favours ideology over learning.

They could also see schools teaching the essential learning requirement of respecting different cultures by studying religion, or by examining how different countries care for their environment.

Or this.

The model sets out a list of 36 “essential learning achievements” for students from pre-school to Year 10.

Let no essential learning achievement be left behind.

ACT in 2013?:

My name is Weasel an I dun got real learned in skool in Australan Capitol Terrytorie wear them teacers let us do wateva we wannata and we dun stil got real gud grades for yeer 12.

Heil Stanhope, our glorius leader 4 eva.

The article spoke about “teacher training” in the essential learnings.

Don’t make me laugh.

The Dept of Ed handed out folders to teachers – which we had to sign for – and then most re-used the folders or just didn’t collect them from the front office of their schools.

I’ve got mine though. Interesting read, but that’s about it. There isn’t anything to it to be honest.

It’s not just about making Govt education non-secular (which it is meant to be), it’s about the “look at us, aren’t we good” from the Dept of Ed.

It’s hard to escape the suspicion its idealogical when whatever is being planned is shrouded behind such a thick veil of faddish jargon.

Just because you have a take against “essential learning achievements” as an idea (or a way of describing an approach, perhaps?) doesn’t make it “ideological”.

I’d say the “three R’s, learn by rote” approach to education is an ideological one.

Still, that’s the advantage of having a voice on websites – every view is equal. And more you talk the more equal you are.

There was another article that said that the ACT govt would no longer provide interest free loans to non-govt schools. Or something like that.

Not sure if it applies to papist schools.
