A man has been rushed to hospital after suffering serious burns trying to extinguish a car fire in Stirling tonight.

The ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire & Rescue were called to the Shenton Crescent property around 11 o’clock after being alerted to a car fire.

When crews arrived they found a man in his 40’s extinguished the fire after being alerted to it but in the process sustained burns to 25 per cent of his body including his legs, abdomin, chest, head and one arm.

Intensive care paramedics stablised him on scene and transported him to The Canberra Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.

UPDATE 03/12/12 10:36: And now a statement from ACT Policing:

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a car fire which occurred in Shenton Crescent, Stirling last night (Sunday, 2 December).

When police arrived at about 10.45pm, the Ford laser which had been in the driveway of the residence had been extinguished by ACT Fire and Rescue.

The resident had tried to extinguish the fire himself, suffering serious burns. He was treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance and transported to The Canberra Hospital.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang but did not see a car or persons in the immediate area.

There was significant fire, smoke and water damage to the vehicle. AFP Forensics seized evidence from the fire for examination.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

Anyone who may have been in the area at the time and can assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Interesting difference in how the man’s actions are presented by the ESA versus the cops.

According to the first report by the ESA, the man had extinguished the fire when they arrived, however the police take on it is that the fire was extinguished by ACT Fire & Rescue and that the man had “tried” to extinguish the fire, implying that he’d tried and failed.

A subtle difference, but a difference all the same.

Not for a Laser. In fact, if I had a Laser go up in flames there’d be a good chance I was the one that started it.

Although, considering the car was in the driveway there’s a pretty good chance his concern was over the house rather than the car, in which case, yes I’d risk the burns.

Apparently there was a loud bang just before the fire engulfed the car so arson is suspected. One things for sure i wouldn’tbe putting my life on the line for a Ford Laser!

“abdomin”

Haha, the ESA spelling memes continue.

The answer to the headline question is yes. Depending on the car, of course.

They’re a weird breed, petrolheads. Only properly understood by other petrolheads. My suspicion is that the individual in this story would respond to the given question with a firm, unhesitating “yes”.
