Is AFL wasted in Canberra

The Herald Sun’s Mark Stevens has a lengthy spray at good footy being wasted on the fields of Manuka.

On past performances, Canberra doesn’t deserve such a marquee match. Plain and simple.

The last time Sydney and the Bulldogs met at Manuka Oval, in the first round of this year’s NAB Cup, just 5557 turned up.

That is pathetic. Canberra has three games a year and that’s the best it could do? Embarrassing.

The AFL would have been better off playing that game at Lavington Sports Ground in Albury.

It was a great day and the footy was super. Bring on more footy to Canberra and hopefully that will push the Government o make it a better vantage point ie. more accessable seating etc. Overall, great day out.

We tried to go to the game on Sunday – was one of hundreds turned away at the gate because it was sold out.

The Swans/Bulldogs game played at Manuka on Sunday drew a crowd of 14500, and if Canberra got their own team you could expect crowds to eventually approach 25000 but a better ground is needed.

The Wildcats are scheduled to play the Swans this weekend. It won’t be pretty… If it was a curtain raiser, I would predict a 250 point margin – maybe more

The game needed the trademark Stan Bowles “slam one at the Cup” trick to liven it up!

capacity at MCG = incredible atmosphere
capacity at Manuka = run out of pies
that being said, I went to the preseason game, it was too friggin hot! but a great ‘intimate’ enclosure to watch em go round and will probly goto the doggies v swans too. hope to be there for an ACTAFL curtain-raiser…except there doesnt seem to be one- top effort whoever failed to put that together – give yourself a pay cut, fk it not going now.

“last year averaged 11,000 close to capacity pissy little ground though, not at all adequate for AFL fixtures”

Capacity at Manuka is 15,000, and if you can’t fill that I don’t see what good moving to a bigger ground would do.

I agree with you about the FA cup final though, one of the worst games I’ve watche in while.

and.. for those of u that havent heard of the premisership season…its errr.. the PREMIERSHIP season!!!

the NAB cup – who cares the real deal is the Premisership season – last year averaged 11,000
close to capacity
pissy little ground though, not at all adequate for AFL fixtures – probly a good attendance for throwy(RU) or chucky (RL) though. This I think constitutes the first text use of the new names for the 2 esteemed Codes, Throwy and Chucky, go forth, and spread the confusion (couldnt think of a polite way to say headuparsey for the scrum heavy code) and, after watching the FA Cup in a packed Melb pub last weekend, I canna think that roundball deserves anything, what a boring waste of 2 hrs!

The match between the Bulldogs and Swans was the day after a Brumbies game, with the Swans resting Hall, Goodes, O’Loughlin and publicly announcing they were playing a development squad.

It was a stinking hot day, and was shown live against the gate on TV. No wonder only 6,000 turned up…

Lights at Manuka – I’d like to see that!

Ok, showing my ignorance towards the round ball code here…
I’d rather go watch a game of footy when it was 9 degrees than when it’s 40 though.

You’d lose that bet, as it was played during the day, and a freezing one at that — 9 degrees from memory.

I seem to recall “the last time Sydney and the Bulldogs met at Manuka Oval, in the first round of this year’s NAB Cup…” it was about 40 degrees. If they’d played this game under lights at night, I’m sure they would have attracted a bigger crowd. How many would go and watch a pre-season soccer, NRL or Super 14 game in the same conditions??? I bet the Sydney v Newcastle game was played at night, yes?

“If people don’t pay to watch then either find out why not”

People don’t watch because there’s not enough interest in AFL in canberra. Those that are interested support specific clubs.

More people are registered with soccer clubs in Canberra than AFL, Union and League combined, yet the government continues to throw $250,000 a year at bringing AFL games to Canberra. For what? An average of 11,000 punters.

A meaningless pre-season soccer game with little promotion and no government support between Sydney and Newcastle drew 7400 at Bruce earlier this year.

If people don’t pay to watch then either find out why not, and improve the value for money, or get rid of it.

Seems simple to me. Whining doesn’t fix anything. (Whoops, there goes RiotACT!)

Yep, totally agree. All we are to these teams is a potential cash run, so screw ’em – I’ll stick with the Brumbies and (occaisionally) the Raiders.

Lots of transplanted mexicans here. If they won’t go and see their national sport it should be scrapped and the $$$ spent on junior sport.

Tassie doesn’t have a team in any national league. What it does have is a deep passion for Aussie rules football, something Canberra is lacking. Scrap it.

You wouldn’t pay a hooker unless she’s attractive or good at what she does. Teams that play in Canberra are whores, plain and simple. They come for the cash and make it clear that is all they are here for.
Why would you pay good money on a hooker (North/Dogs)when you can have a loving long term relationship with a team you know will be around and you can enjoy through good times and bad (Raiders/Brumbies).

The man’s got a point. Launceston manages much bigger crowds at its AFL matches. Canberra struggles to support three codes.
