Is it a Quanger?

Thought Rioters might appreciate this light-hearted dig at Queanbeyan by Canberra rap duo Coda Conduct, which aired on Triple J’s breakfast show this week.

The Canberra Times wasn’t that impressed, but I reckon it’s awesome.

“Canberra! We get a light rail and we a damn sight better with a Skywhale. But meanwhile when we had it, Queanbeyan went and got a giant snail.” Yes.

Although funny, it’s worth remembering that if this was a dig at Canberra there’d be lots of posters here complaining, much like in the past with other places have bagged where we live.

The clear difference is that these two women were actually locals so their putdowns were actually filled with local knowledge and experience.

I think most people get upset with Canberra bashing because it’s most often delivered from people who aren’t locals and base their assessment on a short visit or trip here. And when their main complaints seem to be about politicians and the fact that Canberra isn’t Sydney or Melbourne.

But this isn’t really true is it? Neither of the girls grew up or lived in Queanbeyan, so they were doing exactly what you describe as upsetting others.

You honestly think growing up in Queanbeyan is any different to growing up in Canberra? Or that a member of one area doesn’t know most of the issues or local peculiarities of the other?

And I would hardly call anything they said offensive or worthy of complaint from our neighbours.

It was when I grew up there – very different indeed.

Not that it really matters, though. I just think the point could be debated if anyone cared enough 🙂

Big difference between living in Canberra and paying out Queanbeyan or the northside vs southside debate, than Canberra bashing from far flung places.

The criticism Canberra cops is usually baseless information founded on a few days here if at all! Just like Sydney and Melbourne trying to out do each other. Its pointless, because reality is all cities have undesirable aspects.

When someone says to me Canberra is boring, they rarely can give a decent reason other than the clubs shut early on a Tuesday night…. The fact they are in their 40’s with a family amuses me because I didn’t know there was a big market for nightclubs in Sydney open on a Tuesday late for parents to go to.

This rap though was fairly harmless and some of the sterotypes didn’t even fit…. Locals of Queanbeyan seem to have embraced it, because its not really paying them out that much!

Oh absolutely. We can give criticism, but we can’t take it – perhaps more so than other cities.
