seagulls chasing moths

Media worldwide are reporting on the annual bogong moth invasion of Canberra. I must admit, I haven’t really noticed, although they all say it’s mainly at Parliament house.

Anyone who works up there got any reports or photos of the invasion?

Great Britain

New Zealand

China (I think)

Apparently they’re very nutritious. Are we missing an opportunity, now that Vegemite’s owned by the Yanks, of creating a new iconic Aussie delicacy?

and delicious – de-wing them, get a little butter sizzling in a pan and give them a couple minutes. mmmm

I hope you folk all have a food supervisor certificate.

Mt Coree is another good spot to ‘see’ the migration. At the very last light of day on the horizon you can see them moving.

I can never catch them in the spotlight but the camera flash does a great job, little white dots in the sky.

The bats go crazy for them…………I have nearly been hit by a bat a few times up there in a feeding frenzy.

I went by Parliament House last night and was sure they were bats circling the flag.

If they’re moth’s then they’re HUGE moths.

Mothra! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothra

Just throw them into a heated pan. They don’t need oil or anything as they are naturally fatty.

Obviously once cooked you need to pick off the wings but otherwise, they taste okay.

Good source of protein.

Thanks, but I I think I’ll pass. There’s just something about moths that makes my skin crawl, even the tasty ones.

The cat’s been eating them raw. They must be petering off though because she’s been pretty hungry for breakfast the last two days.

It’s tempting to say they are drawn to a critical mass of gray cardigans, but it’s been going on for a long time:

The top pic is rather wonderful, whatever is in flight.

Bwahaha!

They’ve been a pain out our way for several weeks. Garage full of them, such that we have to leave it open with outside lights on to try draw them out.
Puppy thinks they’re wonderful fun…

I can hear my dog eating them at night, hmm yummy…..

ABC News has some photos: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-11-05/bogong-moths-invade-parliament-house-canberra-storify/5071360?section=act

I was in a building in Barton this week that’s veritably infested with the things, and another which is relatively untouched. Seems to be a local issue.
