Lets recycle is a UK based advocacy group, who espouse the joys of recycling. They also do a damn good job of being paranoid (however, a proof reader wouldn’t go astray).

This post on their website has orignated amidst claims that the ACT government is stepping back from its NoWaste2010 strategy, becuase they have changed their letterhead. If only Government decisions were that easy to pre-empt.

The ACT Government has however confirmed that ACT NoWaste is currently in the midst of a periodic review of operations, and a tender evaluation to find who pat on the back for killing off revolve awarding the contract to Aussie Junk.

“The Canberra Government is backing away from its ‘No Waste by 2010’ strategy,” said Gerry Gillespie, on the board of the local community recycling organisation engaged in the row over a contract tender process last year.
“The government has become greedy for money and sees the $9.6 million they make form landfill as more important that jobs in the local community.” (sic)

What the hell are they building (or have built) out at the Mugga tip? Coming down the Monaro Hwy you see a huge area that looks like concrete (but may not be).

What’s going on?

It was always stupid. 2010 probably sounded a long way off in 1996
As for me, I’m dreaming of a hard rubbish collection!

Just quietly, they’re not the only ones who need a proof reader.

Perhaps we could swap refuse for water with the good folks from Goulburn. Surely they havent filled up that disued mine yet?

Assuming No Waste was ever actually achievable…

While other local governments have implemented large scale composting systems like the Bedminister, or have greenwaste kerbside pickups, ACT has steadfastly continued to place waste in “temporary storage” in landfills.

However I do believe No Waste 2010 was a grand announcement of the previous government in 1996.

Stanhope is big on the grand announcements (particularly with longterm timeframes such as 2010, 2020, and 2050)and feel good media releases, but when it comes time to deliver he always steps back.
