Is there a decent hairdresser for children in Canberra?

I have had my 11 year old son’s hair cut again and, again it is terrible.

Why do hairdressers seem to want to cut boys’ hair as short as possible, and without any style at all?

I don’t want a haircut for $15 that is a ‘number four’ – please there must be someone in Canberra who can do a better job?

I take my four year old to Moes in Tuggers. It is a barbers, however the guy who runs it is young and trendier than me. He asks what you want him to do and whilst he does do a lot with the clippers, if you said you wanted a style he would do that. $20 for kids.

I was surprised by the criticism too. As a mother of four all with different personalities and levels of self efficacy I understand the query about a hairdresser that will give a desired haircut to a child. My 10 year old boy has already started not wanting to go to the hairdressers that I was taking him too because of the short haircuts he gets regardless of request. My other sons and daughter don’t mind at all. I was reading this posting in the hope of finding some hairdressers to try but am dissapointed in the attacks that are being made regarding the question. Does it make any of these people feel better personally to have a dig? Some people like giving themselves a buzz cut and some like a hairdresser that can cut a innovative style, others are inbetween, embrace difference?? I am sorry I don’t have a suggestion for a hairdresser to try, currently seeking one myself that my son will feel okay with. I don’t think you pay for what you get regarding hairdressers necessarily, from experience.

I think an 11 year old should be able to make his or her own choices about haircut styles. Does this haircut worry you, Wini, or your son? Maybe he doesn’t care if it’s short. Did you ask him what he thought?

Wow, there’s some harshness out there. Seriously?? “Wini” just want’s to find a better cutter for her son…not a hard request…there are lots of great/good/average cutters out there all over Canberra. We fall into one of those categories. Some people love us…some may even strongly “dislike” what we do (but i’d like to think we are always in the former). When you find someone you like you stick with them so getting the heads up on a suggestion of who is good makes it much easier than trying out all 300+ salons in Canberra one by one (it could be years of disappointments) before you find what you’re after. #justsaying

‘Watson’ – you are ‘classic”! I laughed out loud. Your’e right, I don’t want my son to look like a ‘Romanian orphan’. I think ‘gourmetmumma’ is right – it is the idea that a kid’s haircut needs to be done cheaply and therefore the amount of time spent is proportinal the cost. I would happily spend full-rates on my son’s haircut – and that does not make me a pretentious or wasetful…just discerning (and I don’t think that I would be alone).

You’re worried about your 11 year old boy’s hairstyle? Sheesh, give the kid a break – he has years of this crap ahead of him as a teen and a young man! Keep it out of his eyes and stop worrying already!

And while you’re at it, stop spending money on clothes! Clothes for kids are so overrated. It’s amazing what you can do with a few potato sacks.

If those clothes cost $140 for a pair of designer jeans when you could get the kid a pair for $19 a K-Mart… yes… stop spending money on them.
These people are probably the same ones bleating about the unfair cuts to middle class welfare because they can’t afford the horrible cost of living.

Awesome assumption. All the person wanted was for her son to not come out of the hairdresser’s looking like a Romanian orphan.

You know, kids like to look good, too. I for one want my kids to take pride in their appearance. That doesn’t mean designer clothes, but it does mean good grooming, including a haircut that looks good with little effort. My teenaged son makes a point of behaving well, being polite, and being well-presented. It’s all part of a bigger picture of being a positive member of society.

A good hairdresser is a good hairdresser regardless of whether they’re cutting an adult’s or a child’s hair.

I think the problem lies with most hairdressers having special kids rates and reducing the time they spend on a haircut accordingly. Our local hairdresser does lots of kids’ hair and charges a fixed fee plus $2 per age, or something like that. It only costs me $17 to get my 6yo girl a haircut. I haven’t had the guts yet to tell them that I’d rather pay double for them to spend a twice as long on her hair so she doesn’t come out looking like a total nerd! Mind you, there was one woman there who managed to give her a far less geeky haircut in the allocated time. So – as above – lots depends on the hairdresser’s skill.

You should go to a hairdresser that charges at least $120 for the kids’ cuts and whatever you do, don’t buy their clothes from K-Mart or Big W. It is best to buy their clothes from a boutique retailer in Sydney. These simple tips will help separate them from the riff-raff. It is incredibly important that kids know their self-worth is found in how stylish they are.

Thanks deejay, gourmetmumma and shirty_bear – I will check out your recommendations. As for BimboGeek – I wrote “I DON”T want a haircut for $15.00”

Take in a picture of Justin Beiber if that’s what you want your kid to look like. Were you expecting a mind reader for $15?

My 2 kids (boy & girl) hate haircut days and the only way I can make it reasonably enjoyable besides bribery of sweet treats is to go to Just Cuts at Gungahlin. They have never had a bad haircut there, plus they set up a portable DVD player in front of them so the kid can watch a movie. They also do this cool thing with hair gel and make it look like the kids have spider webs in their hair…a novelty yes, but whatever works!

You should be careful. I’ve heard that hairdressers groom children.

lol

you get what you pay for. I would recommend my hairdresser, who does the whole family but he is overseas for next few months.

He will set you back over $25 dollars as well.

Joe at Dickson Tradies Club. Good barber(/hairdresser), good bloke, actually enjoys some variation from the standard day-in-day-out buzz cut.
Popular, though – expect to book up to a week in advance.

perhaps you need to be a bit clearer about how you want his hair done?

Try Pauline at Just Cuts Belconnen. She is very protective of her own hair and very careful to follow her clients’ instructions to the letter.
