The ACT Government is planning to build a new housing development for 4,000 people on both sides of Adelaide Avenue, where it meets the Cotter Road near the Canberra brickworks. This will have a massive impact on all Canberra residents living or working nearby and using local transport links.

You will be affected if you:

  • live or work in Yarralumla, Deakin (including West Deakin), Curtin, Weston Creek, Woden and Molonglo
  • use the shops, schools, medical and other community facilities in these suburbs
  • travel to and from work via Cotter Road, Dudley Street, Kent and Novar Streets, Adelaide Avenue and Yarra Glen.

A panel of experts and community representatives will discuss the new development and answer your questions:

  • Amanda Evans, President, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, ACT Branch
  • Representative(s) of Planning Institute of Australia, ACT Division
  • Representatives of the residents’ associations of Yarralumla, Deakin and nearby suburbs.

Topics will include the impact on:

  • the design and livability of the new development and on neighbouring communities, including local infrastructure, facilities and green open space
  • the transport corridor from Weston Creek/Molonglo through to Yarralumla/West Deakin, Woden and Civic
  • Canberra’s national capital and garden city values.

This meeting will inform ISCCC’s decision on how to respond to the Government’s consultation on and emerging public concern about this proposal.

What: Inner South Canberra Community Council – Public Forum
When: 7 July 2014
Time: 7pm
Where: Canberra Deakin Football Club, 3 Grose St, Deakin 2600.

So the equivalent of more than 1% of Canberra’s current population is going to be crammed into that area

Probably not, they seem to have over cooked the numbers. It is proposed to build 1600 properties and to get 4000 people that’s 2.5 each. But if you look at areas of Canberra that already have high density (Braddon, Belconnen, Kingston) the average is 1.9, so I’m guessing closer to 3000.

But don’t worry the plan is to pack Northbourne even tighter.

Turns out that Mr Barr’s spokes-thing thinks it’s going to be 2822. Good thing to know that their estimates are accurate to four significant digits…

If this proposed development goes ahead AFP will have to stop traffic on Adelaide Ave to give visiting heads of state priority when visiting our Governor General. This will cause traffic congestion during peak hours.

the AFP already stop traffic from the airport to Governor Generals when big wigs arrive, so there will be no difference.

Wait till they cram Northbourne Ave, Canberra race course and EPIC with units and then run a tram through there as well. That won’t exactly be free flowing either.

So the equivalent of more than 1% of Canberra’s current population is going to be crammed into that area – looks like a lot more high rise on the way, and not so much of the promised choice (for those who could afford that area). I suppose this will be held out as strengthening the case for extending the blessings of light rail south of the Lake…..

If this proposed development goes ahead AFP will have to stop traffic on Adelaide Ave to give visiting heads of state priority when visiting our Governor General. This will cause traffic congestion during peak hours.
