Issues with TransACT

Last weekend, starting Saturday morning, mother-in-law had issues with her (TransACT connected) land line in Dunlop. Her line dropped out completely, with no ability to phone out or take incoming calls. This also had the effect of causing her monitored security system to go offline (blue light flashing outside and annoying warning ping inside). Upon calling TransACT to report her issues, she was told that there was a weekend call-out fee ($120, or $150, I forget) for faults, should they not be TransACT equipment or responsibility. The problem became intermittent on Sunday, clearing up by Sunday night.

However, her phone line began playing up again yesterday, and interestingly, our TransACT connected land line, also in Dunlop, has had the same fault, though intermittently. I’m just interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced similar issues; either in Dunlop, or on the TransACT network; or both, in the last few weeks.

If the alarm is in it’s alarmed state, which sounds like the case given that the light is flashing, then it will “sieze” the line, isolating all other handsets in the building so that it can us the line to call “back to base” without interruption.
Check that the alarm system is not activated or in some sort of fault condition before ringing your carrier.

My money’s on the Alarm System. I seem to recall in the dark passages of my mind something about Alarm Systems causing telephone line problems.

Simple, just unplug everything attached to the affected landline except for your basic telephone. If the problem persists then it is Transact’s worry and won’t attract a fee. Otherwise, progressively plug each piece of equipment back in until it starts playing up again to identify the cause of the problem.

I’d contact TransACT on 13 30 61 option 5 and report it as an intermittant fault. I believe TransACT will only charge you a $105 call out fee if the fault is caused by your internal equipment, however if it is their line or their infrastructure they wont charge you. At least that’s been my experience.
