Chief Minister Gallagher has donned her santa suit and made to Weston Creek to sprinkle pixie dust and goodies if only she’s given another four years in Government:

If re-elected in 2012, ACT Labor will invest $45 million in Weston Creek in a new 50 metre swimming pool, more Xpresso bus links to Civic, 80 more parking spots, a park and ride, bike and ride, better local shops and a new enclosed oval at Stromlo Park.

This investment will see all Weston Creek and Molonglo Valley residents, now and in the future benefit from a strong and vibrant local community.

The word ‘vibrant’ always rings alarm bells for me . . . stay tuned for a serious decline in Weston Ck’s liveability (in the form of the imminent development of a Gungahlin-esque Molonglo).

Having grown up in the Creek, it doesn’t need a pool and neitehr does the new Molonglo development, at least for the next 15 years or so.

Gungahlin is in far more dire need of improved facilities.

While I agree that the Creek doesn’t need another pool or enclosed oval, I think you are missing a large issue in that approximately 80 – 95% of the large scale developments and promises by ALL Political Parties in Molonglo electorate are pampering to North Canberrans at the expense of South Canberra, Woden & Weston Creek regions.

I’d be interested to see/hear what major developments any parties have planned/proposed for Narrabundah, Lyons, Deakin, etc.

As nice as light-rail from the city to Gunner’s might be or improved traffic flow through the duplication of Horse Park Drive might bring, the various candidates need to be aware of a voter issues down south of the lake as our vote counts just as much as those who live in Gunners.

On a related note, any party that would fast track the duplication of the missing Cotter Road link between the parkway and Yarralumla (including realigning the McCulloch St and Lady Denman Dr intersections into 1 single intersection) is more likely to get my vote.

… and on a sid note, most of these promises from the ALP are already part of the Molonglo development plan and really NOT of any benefit to those who live in Weston Creek region.

lol, why now?

From that photo, it looks like one swerving car could have taken them all out.

Gee, what an incredible coincidence!!!! Could this announcement have anything to do with the fact the key politicans will be attending a -Meet the Candidates’ public forum hosted by the Weston Creek Community Council tonight? (7.30pm, Weston Club, 1 Liardet St Weston if you’re interested).

I don’t swim or play sports but the outcome re buses is an excellent one. The commmunity has been asking for more direct services to the city for ages, instead of the ridiculous current arrangement where many commuters have to backtrack to and interchange at Woden, which makes a 12min car trip into a 45 to 90min journey, depending on the connections.

At the moment Weston remains the only group centre in Canberra without a non-xpresso direct bus service to the city – an unsustainable situation. Ideally, we’d get an all-day direct service, not more xpressos, but this is better than nothing.

It’s great to finally see some attention flowing Weston Creek’s way after being ignored for so long. Still, it’s nowhere near the largesse being spent on Gugahlin (light rail being a case in point, but there’s also overengineered and expensive roads like the Majura Pkw and GDE, of main benefit to Gungahlistas, while for the rest of us Roads ACT doesn’t even have enough money to reseal the roads properly with asphalt, and gives us cruddy chip seal surfaces worse than outback roads)

What the hell is George Gregan doing in that photo????

You have facilities at Phillip Pool, Tuggeranong, Erindale and Civic – all within a bus ride or 15 minute drive. (As an aside, does Deakin pool still exist?)

Gungahlin is in far more dire need of improved facilities.

What? like the tens of millions of improved faciltites they’ve been throwing at Gungahlin for the last 10 years or so? The pool and stadium/enclosed oval they’ve already announced? The ponds? The major road upgrades they’ve been doing?

How long is a bus ride from Gungahlin to CISAC again?

Never mind swimming pools, could we please have more than one petrol station for 24,000 people (and another 12,000 as Molonglo comes online)?

lol @ deakin and phillip pools as viable options

Within 12 months there will be a couple of thousand new homes built around Molonglo. We need to build new facilities as homes are built, not afterwards.

Weston Creek and Molonglo don’t have a pool available 12 months of the year close by. We need to travel to Greenway for the closest indoor pool. Greenway does not have the capacity for more people. An indoor pool and recreation facility at Stromlo Park or close by would be fantastic.

Weston Creek does not have direct bus transport to Tuggeranong which would be nice to have….. There are not direct buses to Barton or defence facilities which would be helpful for commuters.
