It's going to be a big night at Tilleys

So it’s official.

Julia Gillard is going to be sworn in as Prime Minister this later today.

If you’re planning to celebrate it might be worth getting on the blower to book a table at Tilleys tonight.

It’s going to get crowded.

(Also might be worth updating your details with the electoral commission)

UPDATE: In the press conference the Prime Minister designate announced she won’t move into The Lodge until she wins an election.

Pity her neighbours about to have head of government security descend on them. Also going to be interesting to see how fast the CIA and Chinese can buy up adjoining units to listen in.

DavoDavo,

“Who cares if the new prime minister is a woman, anybody is better than Krudd! Good luck to her, but I will still vote Liberal – wouldn’t trust the Labor party with anything, they’re run by the unions and that will never change”.

And 70% of the Federal Parliamentary Liberal Party were Corporate Lawyers. The last I recall ‘Corporate Lawyers’ didn’t represent working people.

Trashman said :

“Not to mention that 38 million that Little Kevvie spent on selling the potential super-profits tax that Julia just announced will be cancelled”

The commercials that is. Not necessarily the tax itself.

Somehow I don’t think whole $38 mill got SPENT. Just a slight exaggeration on your part in your glee to put the boot in. Perhaps we shouldn’t mention $100 million those poor cash-strapped miners were spending on their propaganda. The fact that they caved in to the new tax position a la Julia (which gave up so little) shows who was really telling the truth about their profits and ability to pay a reasonable share in rent.

Now we just need to get Katie to trump Jon before Lizzie steps down or Julia loses an election and we will have women Governing all the way up to the Queen! Who said women couldn’t rule the world!

The queen reigns. She does not rule.

Whatever happened to primary school education?

Sure – Only because we were already in a better position than comparative nations due to the Howard/Costello surpluses.

Your absolutly correct. I get we dont vote for a person we vote for a party. But lets be realistic, the talking head leading the party is who most people consider when ticking (or numbering) the box. The new talking(red)head evens says “when I’m elected by the voters…..” Wrong, as has been pointed out by many, But I’m guessing when the next election comes around those talking heads will be selling themselves not the party. Maybe this time when I listen to the sales spin, I will read the fine print….
Or just slam the door in the salesman(womans)face.

Just as a minor point, and to give all you haters something to mull over, given that she was born in Wales…
Does anyone know exactly when Julia Gillard renounced her United Kingdom citizenship?
(I assume she did it before the 1998 Election that caused the Sue v Hill Decision, I just don’t know the date.)

Well considering her family moved to Australia back in 1966, one may assume she became an Australian citizen many years ago. Especially given her history in the student union movement at university.

I’ve historically been supportive compulsory voting, to lessen influence of “get out the vote” minority groups, but sometimes I ponder the benefits of a voluntary system.

Dose this mean you will be voting for the Labour Party not the Liberal Coalition Party’? Remember you’re voting for your local representative. Not the Prime Minister. The party may indeed change their mind once the election is fought and won as to who will be Prime Minister.

Slimy Tony Abbott as Prime Minister … no way!

She’s WELSH for goodness sake

Exactly. Why haven’t the mainstream media picked this up!

My god, last time I was in Wales I was stuck in a pub for three days as it was pissing down rain.

How many times to I have to say this:

I am pretty sure that at the end of Howard’s reign, interest rates were on the up & up and it was labour that kept us out of recession and the other economic woes !!

I am sure that if liberal were still in during that time, a lot more jobs would have been lost, but the top end of town would have survived ok

They didn’t want him to become a lame duck.

Some quotes;

“The Welsh are stubborn-very, very stubborn. The Welsh themselves would probably rather say “tenacious”, but to anyone on the receiving end a better description might well be – bloody minded.”

“Once a Welshman gets an idea-any idea- in his mind, nothing will dislodge it, and he will go to incredible lengths to realise it. In Wales even pacifists are belligerent about their beliefs”

“To a Welshman the benefits of the wonderful gifts of Welshness are so obvious that there is no need to boast about them. After all the Welshman’s world is made up of only two types of people: fellow Welshmen (who understand already) and the rest (whose opinions do not count)”

“Wales is run by a secret and sophisticated elite, the extent of whose power is carefully hidden. Wales is, in fact, run entirely by Women. Welsh Women are truly formidable. They are strong- minded and articulate, with clear objectives and absolutely no qualms about enforcing them.”

“The Welsh have a great military reputation as men who enjoy fighting and are good at it. This is probably because they find fierce and bloody warfare a pleasant and tranquil alternative to dealing with their womenfolk.”

“The Welsh enjoy talking. They talk incessantly. They talk passionately. They talk about anything. Two aspects of Welsh conversation can confuse outsiders. The first is their habit of mocking what they hold most dear. The second is the way they argue most violently with those closest to them, because they know what they can get away with. A casual listener, hearing the raised voices and the name calling of the most personal and insulting variety, might have difficulty in telling a normal discussion between two close friends from the start of a blood feud.”

“Welshness is an attitude of mind-sometimes psychopathic, often generous, usually friendly and always passionate”

Ooh, I just had a thought, poor Krudd will never now get the chance to show O’Bummer around our lovely city. Aww…

This is not the USA. We don’t vote for a president.

Yes, we vote for our local members. Just goes to show the intelligence of the average (probably Labor) voter. Your extract is an overview of the Section that I mentioned (Hint: maybe I’m already familiar with it?), but you overlook the fact that the (paraphrased) interpretation of the High Court was only made -after- Julia was elected. 😛

If someone was keen, they could probably try to find out exactly when she formally renounced, just so they can form their own Australian brand of the US’ birther movement.
I’m not so fussed, I don’t particularly have an axe to grind, simply enjoy the idea of sending her haters off on a paper chase just to satisfy themselves.

Section 44 of the Australian Constitution is a section of the Constitution of Australia that deals with restrictions on who may become a candidate for election to the Parliament of Australia. Subsection 44(i) asserts that any person “under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience, or adherence to a foreign power, or is a subject or a citizen or entitled to the rights or privileges of a subject or citizen of a foreign power” is not eligible to stand for Parliament. This has generally been interpreted as meaning that persons with dual citizenship are not permitted to stand.[1] Additionally, subsection 44(iv) prohibits anyone who “holds any office of profit under the Crown, or any pension payable during the pleasure of the Crown out of any of the revenues of the Commonwealth” from serving in Parliament.

The problem with this statement has already been pointed out, but given the Labor campaign’s Kev-centricity at the last election I’m not surprised that a number of people believe that they actually were voting for him. I’m not entirely in touch with the average voter, but there’d have to a bit of a backlash brewing on this point.

australia’s electoral system has you vote for your local member in the electorate in which you live. the party with the numbers to form government based on the seats (electorates) they win does so and the party – not you – elects its leader. stop crying, go back and do some civics – oh, that’s right, we don’t have civics on the curriculum in schools, do we, julia? – and harden up.

No argument on that point.

Well, labor’s in for another term IMHO.

the Labor voters who hated Krudd but couldn’t under any circumstances vote for the mad monk (would have to be 90%+) will now be able to settle back, vote Labor in the lower house, Greens in the upper and thus make sure that the looney Libs have a chance to develop some relevancy instead of getting office by being the least worse choice.

It will be interesting to see if Gillard announces a front bench reshuffle. Almost the entire IT industry expects Senator Conroy to be replaced by local girl Kate Lundy sooner or later. Sooner being preferable.

Would that (likely) mean, no more internet filter and finally an R18+ rating for computer games in this country?

Awww, poor Libs, all the effort they put into their just released Kevin O’Lemon ads will have gone to waste.

Sorry but I couldn’t help laughing at Kochie’s reaction over at Channel 7. He was so indignant at the decision. Looked like he didn’t know wether to burst into tears or punch someone 🙂

I was confused about the Tilleys association too. I had heard it was a girls hang out (if you know what I mean) but what are we suggesting…………………?

Ok, for those who came in late, from the wikipedia entry:

When the café first opened in 1984, it was intended as a women’s space, with men allowed entry only when accompanied by women. Popular with lesbian women, it quickly became an icon of Canberra’s LGBT scene. Attempts to restrict or limit entry of men inevitably brought challenges, most notably by a group of cadets from the Royal Military College, Duntroon who attempted to force their way in, instigating a brawl. Eventually the policy was dropped.

What’s the Tilleys connection? I’ve not lived in Canberra very long.

Big night for the sisterhood. Tilleys is their bar.

Bit early to celebrate, isn’t it?

But if you are going to celebrate, surely the focus should be on the first ranga to become Australian PM.

Good to see some of the usual suspects behind this coup, including the likes of Arbib and Shorten.

Shorten – famous for his 15 mins of fame in sounding indignant about worker’s safety being compromised by greedy bosses whilst he was riding on the back of publicity surrounding the rescue of two miners trapped in TAS; and for being a fairly useless junior minister for Disabilities. Would make a better circus clown than anything else.

Arbib – famous for allegedly telling PS staff not to deal with Peter Garrett about the home insulation program, but to deal directly with Arbib and Kevin – until it all went pear-shaped! I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could kick him. If it looks like a rat, it usually is a rat!

No doubt Kevin will be lumbered with all the blame for the BER stuff ups too so that Julia will look squeaky clean!

Go Julia!!!!!
How exciting.
I do feel sorry for Kevin (what happens to him now?).
But I am so happy for Julia, and for Australia to have finally put a woman in a position of real power and influence.
