Justice and Community Safety are asking for your thoughts on road safety:

“The online survey will have a specific focus on speed and the role and use of road safety cameras. It will be open for a period of six weeks from 9 August 2012 to 21 September 2012,” Ms Greenland said.

Ms Greenland noted that there is a range of views within the community regarding road safety measures and speed management, in particular.

She said that an online survey would provide an opportunity for people to contribute their views about speeding and the role of police and road safety camera enforcement.

“The survey includes questions about speed limits and speed enforcement which form part of the Government’s overall speed management approach. Issues covered include a range of engineering, enforcement, education and encouragement measures.

I’m sure it will be used to justify more cameras etc lol. They always use BS surveys with dodgey questions that they can select some random statistic from to say that the people want something

You know, I saw this online on a t-shirt!

I think we need to get together and form the ‘sharks with fricking lazer beams for Canberra’ party before the next election, we would only need to sign up 25 a year, that’s about one a month each. I don’t know that we would need anything in our platform other than a commtiment to foill the lakes with bull sharks enhanced with lazer beams.

You’re on. Get some decent candidates, hand out some free t-shirts and it’s ours for taking…

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

I personally don’t want to see more cameras, I want to see more police on the roads as they can not only deter speeding but other offences (traffic and otherwise).

willing to cop a massive rates hike to pay for them?

No. But I am willing to have the government spend the money they do get more wisely.

Please elaborate on how many new police you would like to see employed and where the funding will come from.

Reduction in public art spending?

okay, what is the current and projected spending on public art and how many police officers will that employ, on a continuin basis including on costs?

One MILLION dollars…

would be cheaper to get sharks with fricking lazer beams.

Given our lack of proximity to salt water they would obviously need to be bull sharks – though I am not sure that even they could survive LBG.

I did the survey, but will not submit it.
The results of this survey is irrelevant as the number of camera will be increased regardless of what people answer.

I have instead forwarded my answers with opinions of the survey questions, as well as the questions that I feel should have been asked to CORBELL@act.gov.au
I would encourage others to do the same.

Nice ploy, except I’d be shocked if anyone named “Corbell” ever actually eyeballs e-mail entering that mailbox.

But there is one Karen Greenland’s (“Executive Director for Transport and Road Safety Policy”) name plastered all over the presser … so maybe try karen.greenland@act.gov.au and you might even reach a person.

Actually, I listed that email address as it is the only one listed on the JACS website:
http://www.justice.act.gov.au/ways_to_contact_us/contacts

Not particularly concerned that it goes to Simon Corbell as much as responses go to JACS. Cannot see the point of using the Canberra Connect feedback option. The lack of contacts is another demonstration that JACS are not actually interested in peoples responses to their community survey.

well, on the plus side, its keeping someone at JACS employed

That is a very poorly constructed survey. The answers are limited and seem to have been designed around shaping the responses into a pre-determined outcome.

And that just highlights the issue. If it was all about road safety, they’d employ more police. But its not only about road safety, its also about raising revenue, while doing a something under the guise of road safety. I still see a lot of bad driving where there is no speed camera, because lets face it, you don’t see as many cops on the roads these days. I can’t believe how many people think that using a mobile is ok.

If they put all the money from speed cameras into policing, that would help. But I bet it would put a hole in the budget somewhere, thus showing that revenue is an important aspect of speed cameras, with any government.

Agreed the survey is too simplistic and should have asked for more than agree/disagree because the answers have no context.

I did my best to imply that the use of speed cameras in the ACT is useless because their site selection was done by clowns with no idea with little interest in road safety. I fully support the use of red light/speed cameras at intersections because red lights seem to be “stop if you feel like it” these days, but speed cameras in other locations should be limited to locations where there is a history of injury or death resulting from speed. Given that the majority of accidents in the ACT are the result of drivers failing to stop in time or to give way or are just motorcyclists with a death wish, all other cameras can be removed and funding provided to the police to provide active traffic law enforcement, rather doing what they can, when they have the resources to do so. I don’t think they will get that from ticking the boxes though..

Absolutely agree that we need a sh*tload more red light/speed cameras.I have and still continue to spend significant time driving on Canberra roads and it pisses me off immensely when i get a green light and some absolute farktard is tearing through the intersection well after they’ve got a red light. What’s even more disturbing is that i have noticed that in recent years even more truckies are guilty of doing this simply because it’s way too much of an inconvenience to stop. It’s about bloody time we got serious about tackling this reckless attitude.

Agree, while I have no issue with the idea that speeding does cause accidents, I think its the scape goat for all accidents. I think poor unattentive driving is the cause for a majority of accidents, and part of the reason is speeding or impairment via alcohol, distraction eg mobiles etc.

If the money from speed cameras was put directly into policing these other issues, i’d be all for them.
Reality is while they slow people down they still make a lot of money from them also and i dare say a mobiler camera van or a cop would be better at catching the people who need to be caught.

Yeah that was odd. I don’t think it was loaded but some of it was unclear. One question seems to appear twice, slightly different. And I can’t help but wonder how are the responses to all this going to be interpreted and why? So that has me a bit confused to. (And where’s the text box….) But I tried to answer honestly and that’s about the best you can do.

That last question threw me for a while. Why am I given an exclusive choice between three options, once I decipher the terminololgy. I thought all three things were important. These idiots are going to race three relevant points to see which wins, when they should all factor in, why?

To eliminate the other two and save on the work, or to influence how they plan to applaud their own achievements to maximum effect?

BAH.

Still… some of those questions were clear enough. Just didn’t cover some of what I think are relevant points in all of this. Such as the baffling array and arrangement in some places of too many types of limits and how they switch in the most absurd ways sometimes.

I did the survey, but will not submit it.

I agree, the survey isn’t very good. It does seem to be developed to provide the outcome they really want which everyone supports cameras.

I personally don’t want to see more cameras, I want to see more police on the roads as they can not only deter speeding but other offences (traffic and otherwise).

Just did the survey and was unimpressed with it. The questions are simplistic and there is no attempt to determine the reasoning behind why people answered as they did. The only question that might have any value is the last. I doubt that any reasonable conclusions could be drawn from this survey.
