Jalepeno Shortage hits Subway!

A while ago I posted news of a supposed pineapple juice shortage and, miraculously, almost immediately the pineapple juice started to flow once more.

Envoking Murphy’s Law, I’m now alerting Rioters to the absence of jalepenos in Canberra Subways (the sandwich chain), apparently due to an American supply shortage.

I like it when I ask for the steak and cheese, and then get asked if I would like cheese with that…….

Subway is some kind of sandwich shop, yeah? They could just go and buy a jar from the deli, they’re not that hard to find….

Subway make all their franchisees buy their stock directly from them, that’s how they make their money. I assume they would never allow outside food into their stock.

I am amazed to hear that KFC did that with the buns. I bet their head office doesn’t know about it.

I have a little fruiting Jalapenos plant out the front, maybe I should move it out back in case someone steals it!

Jalapenos are very expensive at the moment – well for the last couple of months. Market prices are high Austrlia wide for them so you get what you pay for.

I tried growing jalapenos and habaneros in my vegies this year but neither fruited :(. any advice?

Jalapeños are pretty easy to grow in Canberra, though they do have sooky moments and do take quite a while to set their first fruit. Not sure about habeneros.

Jalapeños are perennials, so(assuming its otherwise healthy) just carefully dig it up, and put it in a large pot with potting mix. Feed and water, put it next to a nice north facing wall. Bring it inside when the frosts come, and keep it in a sunny spot, and put it out when they’ve gone. You will have flowers and chillies coming on at random times of year depending on how it feels about the “weather” this creates. We have chillies ripening most of the year, and our plant has been going 3 or 4 years. Doesn’t seem the least bit fazed by us forgetting to water it till the leaves drop, or having all its branches eaten by possums (mad, masochistic possums).

You need to pickle them while green to create your classic Mexican taste. But they taste yummy when red and fresh, too.

@Ozchick (#2) – KFC Hawker is the worst KFC in the world in my opinion. They are always out of something or other, or screw up the order. They are basically incompetent, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the bread shortage was due to their own failings rather than what they blamed it on.

I didn’t even know Hawker had a KFC until a friend mentioned it, though I don’t really know where Hawker is, I gets lost on the dark side.. lol

My dear husband went to KFC last night and they had run out of chicken! Crazy!

KFC in the Canberra Centre were ‘sold out’ of Twisters one night when I went there. On several occasions they’d ‘run out’ of drinks and were pouring it into your cup from 2L bottles.

I’ve also seen them using the drinks being poured from bottles there too. I wouldn’t recommend going there if you wanted to get served sometime in your hour lunch break, though the staff battle through.

jalapenos are the most expencive salad ingredient, so thats why theu are not putting many on or are not stocking them, it is just another way they can make more money, ask for heaps.

You have to give us a hint, like an orange fedora or something.

I think “The Works” doesn’t include jalepenos, even though the sign stating “Does not include jalepenos” actually has jalepenos pictured!

They normally ask me what salad I’d like. I normally respond with “everything except the lettuce”* and they then ask about the jalepenos. When they stock them that is.

(* You, too, can play “Spot PM” at your Westfield Subway!)

try red rooster in wanniassa. hawker kfc disappears into insignificance next to the blunders on offer there.

I am devastated also, deezagood, but unfortunately not surprised.

I suffer from a rare but chronic condition whereby everything I like is discontinued.

So I can only apologise for having liked the wraps, as I am afraid I am to blame for their demise.

Just don’t get me started on Callard & Bowser Nougat ….

That doesn’t affect me because I always go the wrap. But my family don’t seem to mind the puns too much.

Granny – I have some alarming news for you … my local Subway told me that the wraps will soon be no more; they are ‘phasing them out’! I was devastated (yes, I need to get out more 🙂

The sign at subway says something like “Ask for the lot (does not include Jalapenos)”

So when they ask what salads I want(I hate how they ask what salads I want, salads implies just, however a collection of vegetables makes up just one salad on your sub, so it should be asked “What do you want your salad to comprise of, but in saying so I saw a duck once) I say the lot, but no jalapenos, and they look and say the lot does not includes jalapenos anyway, so I shrug and say ok, if I just ask for the lot, they include jalapenos anyway.

What can you do ?

When I get a sub with Jalapenos they never give me very many, so I ask for more and they put more on because they are all out of bad puns.

When I get a sub with Jalapeno’s they never give me very many. It’s as though they only pepper them on!

Ask them to put more on.

It’s what I always do. They seem to take it as a personal challenge to see how many they can shove on.

Last week I went into Subway and asked for a Turkey footlong.

When we got to the salads bit, I said, “I’ll have it without Jalapenos”. The young lass behind the counter said, “we’re out of Jalapenos”. And then I said, “Oh OK, well I’ll have it without olives then”.

She just look at me.

Ask for extra jalapenos, I do and they always put more on. Maybe it’s my fault?
BTW the olives at Subway are crap, kind of metallic taste.

When I get a sub with Jalapeno’s they never give me very many. It’s as though they only pepper them on!

It’s all good, I’ll give them some of my habaneros that they can use instead… tee hee hee.

About this time last year Subway at Belco lake had a sign saying something along the lines of “due to a nationwide lettuce shortage we are only able to provide minimal lettuce on your sandwich. We hope this doesn’t cause any inconvenience”.

I thought it was strange as McDonalds and the other fast food chains didn’t seem to be having the same problem.

Yep, better call Triple O.

Well there were plenty of pickled and fresh jalapenos in the US during Feb. I’d love to buy a giant jar of them at Walmart, the thing is like a gallon and you need two hands to lift it, cost under $5, but I cannot work out how to bring it home.

So plan B is to pickle my own, I have found some recipes that look like they get the same result.

They didn’t use mice then? KFM?

> But I’m on a diet now

I doubt jalepenos are fattening…in fact, hot food speeds up your metabolism & aids in losing weight (not that japapenos are actually very hot).

I doubt you’ll get jalapenos unless I go looking for ’em, PM … however, I did have jalapenos on my Subway just last week!

But I’m on a diet now.

*sigh*

I bought a KFC Tower Burger the other week at KFC Hawker and their supplier didn’t supply the bread for it, so I had to get it in an alternative bread roll. Very disappointing…

yeah, i saw that the other day.

Pfft.
