Do you like design? Do you like Japanese stuff?

If you answered no to both of these you probably lack both a heart and a head.

But if you said yes then you’ll be thrilled to learn that the ANU has announced they’re opening an exhibition of contemporary Japanese design this Thursday, running to 21 April.

Japanese Design Today 100 introduces 90 designs for household items produced during the 1990s and 13 others from 1950s post-war Japan which highlight the roots of contemporary design in the country…

School of Art Gallery Program Coordinator, James Holland, said the exhibition gives viewers an intimate look into everyday life in Japan.

“The design of household items acts as a mirror that reflects our lifestyle,” he said. “Unlike architecture, the furnishings and equipment used in everyday life can be easily gathered together in one place to make an exhibition.

Assuming the photo of a pet robot on ANU’s site is a hint, I have a bad feeling that they will mostly be comprised of gaming consoles, gadgets, and a toilet… (are they called washlets?).
