jazz garters

Last night Goosepig and I took up an invitation to the opening night of Canberra Rep’s Jazz Garters at Theatre 3 (behind the School of Art).

Jazz Garters is in some ways an evolution of the Old Time Music Hall, with a more jazz bar / music revue feel.

There’s singing, dancing, and short comedy numbers, often with singing and dancing.

There’s lots of very good looking and talented people looking good and being talented.

With a Centenary badge tacked on the first act in particular had a lot of references to Canberra history.

For once jokes about Canberra were well made, actually funny, and well informed.

The depicting of the old NCDC as the “Blitzing Backyard Burkes” and the NCA as the Bernard Cribbins cowboy builders of “Right Said Fred” fame certainly struck a note to those who know this city well.

The second act picked up pace and the Gilbert and Sullivan themed working over of Julia Gillard had the crowd gasping at the audacity while howling with laughter.

A very worthy fun night out.
