Jeremy Hanson is very upset with Shane Rattenbury

ACT Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson has just issued a media release where he “slammed the lack of integrity and character of Greens Minister Shane Rattenbury.”

It seems Mr Rattenbury didn’t support Hanson’s call for an inquiry into ACTEW.

“Despite his rhetoric in the media at the ‘obscene’ rates of pay at ACTEW, Rattenbury today danced to the tune of his ACT Labor mates and gave in to their demands for no further scrutiny into an area that is of significant concern to the community,” Mr Hanson said today.

“This act of weakness strips Shane Rattenbury of any traces of independence he might have left, and casts serious doubts on the integrity of his comments in the media. “Shane Rattenbury has talked tough about these matters, but when push came to shove he slinked away and did a deal behind closed doors with the Labor Party.

“The people of Canberra who clung to the hope that the Greens might genuinely offer ‘third party insurance’ had that hope shattered today. I think even the Greens’ supporters would be disgusted at this cowardly capitulation.

Check out the full release, but before you do I want you to use your imagination.

Imagine young Jeremy stomping his little foot on the ground over and over. Imagine his right arm stuck straight out from his shoulder with a stiff finger pointed across the room at Rattenbery, who is whistling and staring at his finger nails innocently. Imagine Jeremy’s eyes boiling over with tears and his voice shill and full of impotent fury.

Got that image? Ok now read the release.

The whole handling of this pay topic has been disgraceful.

How can a salary of $855k for Mr Sullivan be justified for a monopoly utility that constantly overspends on projects.

Shame on the major of Canberra and the monkeys that voted for him.

Let’s sack the board, sack Mr Sullivan and start again (and bring down the costs of my water bills)

Probably worth repeating at this juncture that Mark Sullivan is paid (I won’t write “earns”) TWICE as much as the President of the United States.

Shane got on radio and had his little spat but when he needed to stand up and show some balls he ran behind his “just cover it up” mates again.

Why bother ranting on radio Shane if you won’t vote for it? Stop wasting our time

Lord Rottenborough is, however, running some sort of workshop on “Activism” this Saturday in Civic ….

Bring it back into full government control.
The myth that private does it better than public is just that. And this scandal is clear evidence of that.
Once in public hands again, we can get serious about breaking the nexus between consumption and profit. Their “product” is something that in this era of environmental concerns we need people to consume less of. But having them sold through a private venture means the driver is always to sell more.

That. Well said.

The private sector normally does it much better with sufficient competition.

That’s one good reason to scrutinize ACTEW in the interests of the public.

Why on Earth should we be using less water in this city during times of higher rainfall and full dams? People should be made to pay the full price of their usage above a certain basic amount and when the water is plentiful, we shouldn’t be striving to “save” water for some nebulous environmental reasons.
Of course we shouldn’t waste water but we should be aiming for efficiencies rather than just cutting water use for the sake of it.

Yes, we should be aiming for greater efficiency in using water. This means always using less water. This means developing water-miserly habits, planting drought hardy gardens, collecting rain water at point of consumption, and resisting the urge to splurge just because we happen to be in a particularly wet period.

I agree that water use charges should be consumption based, but that doesn’t mean we should aim to use more water just because there is more water around this year.

Develop good water management habits, not a binge-purge habit.

The oligarchy running the Actew franchise may counter your suggestion and dissolve the ACT Government instead.

That would probably provide better value for money for the tax payer.

Disagree with this.

As for the scandal, have you seen the ACT government’s record on providing services and infrastructure? I hardly think taking full government control would be the panacea you think it to be.

Given the recent separation of water services from ActewAGL to form ACTEW Water I wouldn’t be surprised if the end game is for the ACT Government to absorb the utility under TAMS and dissolve the board.
