Jezza wants Canberra AFL team

By Thumper 20 September 2006 12

The CT is reporting that Carlton legend Alex Jesaulenko believes Canberrans would support a full-time AFL team based in the territory.

He also thinks that four Melbourne based teams should be dropped to make way for teams from Canberra, Tasmania, Gold Coast and Darwin so as to have a truly national competition.

Having lived in Victoria as a young tacker in the VFL days, I would suggest that there exists too many old die hard in Melbourne who still believe that anyone outside Victoria doesn’t count as a real team.

What’s Your opinion?

A Canberra team would struggle to get decent gate attendences with Manuka’s Capacity of 15,000. Also there is the issue of Corporate sponsorship. They would have to be propped up the ACT government, remember we (ACT citizens) had to pay for the “privillage” of the Kangaroos playing here.

I just bought a Carlton garden gnome. If Carlton move up here I’ll happily donate it to play in the defensive line.

Tasmania would have a team? Training would be like a family reunion!

Yeah, St Kilda could move (i hope, I can go to more games them, though Saints wont be moving for atleast a year) Not with Grant gone.

I think the afl right now is in shambles with the money issue. and in order to go in a new direction to take 1 step forward, they have to take 2 steps back.

Also…collingwood can stay in melbourne 😛

Comets? Please… they still exist, even if only in the second tier comp where they belong… I went to enough Comets games at Manuka to know that a crowd of 1000 was an absolute miracle…

Comets +2 from this little black duck.

Jezzas suggestion would be fantastic and is nice in theory, but it is unlikely to happen any time soon. An AFL team in Canberra will find it too hard to compete with two other football codes during winter in a city of 300,000.

And if the FFA has its way I predict the ACT will have an A-League franchise to call its own in the not too distant future. (Resurrect the Cosmos!)

Corporate dollars can only go so far.

But I do agree that there are probably 4 too many AFL teams in Melbourne. Likely candidates for relocation/merger/collapse would be Kangaroos, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn & St Kilda.

yeah +1 for the comets.

I wouldn’t mind see a Canberra team, not a half arsed attempt to get some fading Melbourne team here for a few matches a year.

Doubt it will happen though.

And I’d rather see the Comets in the first class arena before an AFL team.

I enjoy sport. Hate the mob mentality that goes with it though.

i wouldn’t.
but then, i’m rabidly anti-sport.
other family members would though.
