Joey Johns; Lord of the Blues

Just a quickie; How good is Andrew Johns? Only nine games in two years and in one night he has crushed the hopes and dreams of Queenslanders everywhere. I like that.

I had heard ramblings on the local FM tripe radio this morning where he was compared with players like Wally Lewis and Allan Langer. Credit where credit is due, fine players in their own rights, but never in twenty-five years of watching sports have I seen one man lift a team to such an extent as last night. I have taken a poll of fanatics this morning and we all (four of us at this stage) agree that he is probably the best we’ll see in our life time.

So if you don’t really have an interest in the Origin Series or couldn’t make it to a TV last night; do yourself a favour and catch the decider (July 6th I think) so you can tell your grandchildren about it one day.

The only thing that pisses me off about Origin at the moment (other than Billy Slater and Carl Webb) is that once again the selectors have overlooked Raiders who are clearly good enough to get amongst it.

C’mon Fiona, johns’ is onto a great thing.

Newcastle bankrupt themselves paying for his lifestyle and he plays a couple of games of footy a year and get to be a hero.

League is allright but I must admit I think of how great an aus team would be (locky&Johnsy halves combo)… and then I realise who have we got too play NO ONE…. so Im gonna have to remain a rugby fan

Zzzzzzzzzz

Go Ralph the footy facts man!

All said and done I had heard Smith knocked the selection back due to club commitments. My gripe lies in the fact that we have consistently good players (Schifkoske, Withers etc) who could be playing the big stuff.

Johns didn’t go and get himself injured again, surprising, really.

Ryan O’Hara played in Origin last year.

Interesting about Jason Smith – I didn’t know that. Any word on why he declined?

Yes, other individuals (as opposed to teams) are playing better. It was the same last year where the Raiders were solid top 6 for most of the season and got no one (as far as I can remember) into Origin. Makes my point again, as well as the Raiders do as a team – there aren’t stand out *star* individual players that are playing better that other individuals in lower ranked teams.

Jason Smith was picked for the initial 30 man Queensland squad. He declined the offer.

A couple of Raiders are suitable for Origin football, but there are other players at other clubs that are playing better.

But a relevent one nonetheless. It strikes me as odd that the 12th and 15th ranked teams in the comp (on the ladder) have players that walk into the side. It seems then that a majority of the spots in both squads are picked on rep as opposed to form.

Having said that, the selectors need to pick a team, and whilst the Raiders might work well together as a team, it’s obvious that they don’t have any *star* players (both in a media sense and an ability sense).

a pretty tentative connection to Canberra in there
