Simon Corbell has announced the elevation of John Hinchey to the position of ACT Victims of Crime Commissioner.

“Mr Hinchey has extensive experience in this area, and has acted in the position for some time, and I am sure will provide excellent support to those in our community who require these services.”

The Victim of Crimes Commissioner position replaces the Victims of Crime Coordinator following amendments last year to the Victims of Crime Act 1994.

Mr Hinchey has been acting in the position since 1 March 2011 and will also take up the appointment of Domestic Violence Project Coordinator.

The Victims of Crime Commissioner is responsible for advocating for the interests of victims, ensuring the provision of efficient and effective services for victims.

“The role of the Commissioner will also be consulting on and promoting reforms to meet the interests of victims and developing educational and other programs to promote awareness of the interests of victims,” Mr Corbell said.

Maybe he will do a good job? Better than the last one i hope?
I got stabbed in Nov 08 & had to have open heart surgery to save my life, as i got a 3cm cut in my Right ventricle, if it wasn’t for an air bubble that formed i would of bled out before the ambo got there (so the specialist told me a few weeks after the operation)
The person who stabbed me got a slap on the wrist in the form of a two yr good behavior bond, which when appealed was extended to three and a half yrs.
I now have a nice scar running the length of my chest & it took 3mths before i could even start move or to do any physical activity & then another 6mths for me to heal enough to move without pain, but when i went to Victims of crime for assistance to see about claiming compensation, even for a reimbursement of my travel & medical costs.
Every time i rang them there was no one available to take my call, so they had to call me back, i think that in the 30mths or so that my file was with them i had 5 different case managers (as they kept leaving, 2 of them got pregnant & went on maternity leave)
Finally my case was rejected on account of, “that it was not of a sexual nature”? (go figure)
So can you tell me where is the justice for the actual victims? Now i have been through Victims of Crime, no other Solicitor wants to take the case on, or they say to go see Victims of Crime…
So does anybody out there know if i am entitled to any form of compensation?
