Jolimont Centre Fire

Not entirely new news as the 104.7 guys would have been on this very quickly, but the jolimont centre was again evacuated just a few moments ago because of an electrical fire somewhere on the ground floor. No less than 6 fire engines as well as police were in attendance (i know this because my building was evacuated for a drill at about the same time ironic eh?).

Anyone else know more?

Yes, niftydog, there is definitely a curse on that site. Many years ago (c.1969/1970)the old abandoned Civic Police Station was located there and BURNED TO THE GROUND!! There was also a big fire there in the 1970’s. The possibility of its being an faulty portal to the devil’s kingdom should be investigated.

That Hazmat truck is good, they even have a nice thoughtful shower in case people feel a bit dirty.

I drove past around 11.30 and there were 3 fire trucks and that huge hazmat response truck, they were all around the entrance to Novotel, rather than the actual Jolimont Centre.

Remember a couple of years ago there was a bomb scare at Jolimont because someone left an unattended bag or something?

Demolishing that hideous structure would be doing it a favour (providing it had been evacuated of course).

Hi Jazz,
104.7 moved out to Gungahlin to share studio space and facilities with Mix 106 (formerly Kix) at least 8 years ago. At one stage the joint FM newsroom was outsourced to Watson inside the Prime TV building (when Prime actually had a real newsroom). But all the FM stations are in Gungahlin now. 2cc and 2ca are in Mitchell. ABC is at Dickson. Perhaps some of the commercial radio stations should be moved to Canberra’s Southside to provide balance. 🙂

When the Jolimont seige happened, the radio people had to climb out a window! No wonder they moved… (we had front row seats for that, our street windows looked out onto the Jolimont, cops sprinting around Alinga st with big guns).

did they? must be cheaper rent out there 🙂

The Jolimont Centre does seem to have more than its fair share of incidents though.

It’s no Jolimont Siege, now that was news!

Not about the fire, but I know 104 isn’t there any more – they moved out to Gungahlin yonks ago.

What is it with that place? Is it possessed or something? Seems to want to burn down!

Oh, and apparently the fire was in pool equipment.

Yay, RA doesn’t look washed-out anymore.
