WIN have confirmed to us that Lachlan Kennedy is now the acting Chief of Staff for WIN News.

We’re currently chasing down why this would be the case and what’s up with the controversial and colourful news director, Jorian Gardner.

More on this as it comes to hand. We’ve requested comment from all the players.

UPDATE: We’re hearing that Jessica Good is also no longer with us. As a JG myself the purge against these initials chills the blood.

Hey I’ll take over the news reading. Nowhere near as easy on the eye as Jessica, but it could be fun to do the local news in the same vain as Clive Robertson used to do the late news. A bit like this.

I’m hoping we will be getting real news now and not just sports and political reports.

There’s a story about Jessica Good leaving over at the Spy Report, a media news website, and it has a few interesting tidbits… among other things, it suggests that Lachlan Kennedy is not in the frame to replace her.

http://www.mediaspy.org/report/2010/07/31/jessica-good-to-leave-win-news/

he might start a riotact 2 in his [copious] spare time… look out JB

We thrive on more online sources to reference.

I do prefer Lachlan Kennedy as the news reader over Jessica.. She is very stoney face and her stylist (if there is one) should have got the chop after her first week. They could turn it into the Lachlan News with him being the news, sport and weather presenter plus chief of staff?

If 3yr terms are the norm, its likely that JG’s 3yr term is up and either one or both parties may have chosen to go their different ways.

Maybe WIN could poach Siobhan Heanue from the ABC and bring some class to the bulletin.

Lets just hope the wardrobe people are going to get cycled also, as they have absolutely nailed the ability to dress female presenters in drab outfits at best.

You’re the two best reasons to watch the latenight news.

+10. my evenings are, alas, a bit poorer

Jessica gone…. oh say it is so. She’s no journalist, she’s an awkward and phoney speech reader. Virginia at ABC has substance, all Jessica Good has is too much hairspray.

WIN’s a dangerous place to work around election time it seems.

Actually, in these cases it’s a combination of operator error (director/DA/camera operator/audio mixer all in one!) and the million dollar piece of junk they operate.

WIN generally has a large turnover of staff and currently have very few experienced directors.

Combine this with an automated switching program which is completely unreliable plus no on-site support staff to fix the problems and it’s a recipe for disaster.

However, the director’s job is not helped by a dysfunctional news room that fails to deliver its content on time. It’s really only this aspect that falls back on Jorian in regards to on-air issues.

Um, I’m pretty sure the station has a general manager, and the news program would have a director and/or executive producer, all of whom would outrank the chief-of-staff.

Agreed. When I saw this post, my first reaction was; Wait, Gardner’s been doing what…!?

What idiot gave him the gig in the first place??

But while I have absolutely no love for Gardner, I have to agree with other commenters responses to Outta Control. A technical issue like the one he described has nothing to do with Gardner. The buck wouldn’t stop with him in this instance, it would stop with either the Master Control operators (who aren’t even in Canberra) or the techincal staff charged with keeping the signal on the air.

people actually watch channels other than abc and sbs? astounding! 😉

LOL at Outta Control’s suggestion that Jorian was somehow responsible for a technical failure. Good one.

Kennedy’s a gun, glad to hear he’s acting CoS.

Jorian was just another in a long line of incompetent COS’ that have sat in the chair over the years.

There have been worse.

True, WIN News has been pathetic and unprofessional since Jorian took over.
But WIN News was also pathetic and unprofessional before Jorian took over, so why should we blame only Jorian for failing to turn the ocean liner?

LOL at Outta Control’s suggestion that Jorian was somehow responsible for a technical failure. Good one.

Jorian’s a loose cannon, sure. What a shame there seems to be so few places for them.

I should amend my first point and mention that it’s a combination of inexperienced directors and an automated program called ‘Ignite’ that has caused nothing but problems for WIN TV and the ABC ever since WIN introduced it into Australia a few years ago.

Let’s hope this is true. WIN News has been pathetic since Gardner took over, both the standard of stories and the content of the bulletins. Gardner was also running the show when the embarrassing Anzac Day marathon cock-up took place and also the infamous night when the screen went black just as the news was about to begin and WIN stayed off air until the end of A Current Affair. Hopefully with the departure of Gardner we might see some professionalism at long last.

I love it when a newbie comments on an issue like this.. An insider with a chance to vent their spleen.

I can reveal to you the following facts:

1. Jorian actually isn’t responsible for the technical mistakes that occur on air. That’s due to inexperienced production staff.

2. He was on a fixed contract.

3. That contract was unlikely to be renewed.

I am amazed at vitriol of these personal attacks.

Jorian has done so much to promote independent artists in Canberra. 6 years of Fringe and 4 years of Bunch of Fives before that. All this was done in his spare time while holding down full-time jobs like his City News journo job. He was tireless, dedicated and most importantly EFFECTIVE. AS WIN news chief, he was apporachable, generous with his time and always ready to cover community events.

Yes he has a personality: He is funny, generous, moody and passionate. Yes he is outspoken unlike most Canberrans who are too worried about their public service or other Government funded jobs to ever express a real opinion (except in a cowardly anonimous way like most of the contributers to this discussion). Yes he is short. And no he’s not perfect. I don’t think any of these are bad things.

And PS: How is the Chief of journos at WIN personally responsible for some clearly technical problems? (on the weekend I believe – when the man actually gets a day off!)

Short man – very TALL POPPY

Hopefully one of his 4 followers in Twitter will give us the goss: http://twitter.com/CNcanberra

On the plus side, the new set for Win News looks fantastic as does the weather graphics.
On the down side, the race report is annoying and even creepy at times, the political reporter is an idiot who just plagerises national reports.

Outta Control said :

WIN stayed off air until the end of A Current Affair.

That may be his crowning achievement! Now, is there anyone who can get the other tabloid current affairs regurgitator off the air?

as to the man himself, a good face for radio, a good voice for print and content that is not worth saying in any medium at all (except maybe RA).

Maybe he should restrict himself to the Fringe of reporting?

: )

And here’s me thinking that’s where he was already.

He’s not exactly tv presenter material..

Or appropriate for radio either. Maybe print? Nah. He tried that and it was a bit dodgey as well.

I would gave thought he would have been on a fixed term contract given his appointment was to cover the maternity leave of the chief, a choice not to renew his contract maybe?

I noticed that they had toned him down a bit of late when he was presenting the odd human interest story, his early pieces were ridiculous. He’s not exactly tv presenter material..

People get their news from TV? Next you’ll be telling me they read it on dead trees!

Karma! I say they need hight restrictions on future COS’s anyone over 4″3 is acceptable.

I am sure it wasn’t anything to do with Jorian. [sarcasm]

I think that is a good move on wins behalf, knowing him as I do it the habitual heckler he stepped the line one too many times.

Colourful Sydney Racing Identity has it right. WIN News is just a random half hour of media releases, some read and some performed to camera. No suggestion of intellectual input from anyone at all. As lame as it is dull.

Not being a regular watcher of WIN News, I saw Jorians race preview last week from Thoroughbred Park.

I saw that too, first time I’d seen or heard of this guy, and thought “what the hell? Is he a first day cadet or something?”
