Rarely out of the news for long Jorian Gardner has just posted the following to facebook:

I am beating The Canberra Times to it. Tomorrow they will publish a story, because apparently they can’t resist putting in the boot when I screw up, where they allege I was pulled over by ACT Police & blew over the limit, then didn’t appear for my court date. I confirm it’s true. First off, I got the date wrong so I didn’t intentionally not attend – I honestly thought it was the end of next week (I am currently away). Second I wasn’t drunk & over .05 but because my license wasn’t current, I was subjected to 0.00 & yes I had had a drink. It aint the first time I did something stupid & probably wont be the last. I apologise to my mum & my friends. To the haters – I really don’t care what you think so eat my shorts. Now can I just have a friggin break now please? I may extend my holiday by a few days. Thanks for reading.

After they arrested Monfries a number of times and he kept getting released you mean?

At what point does it become OK for the police to stop doing their job?

Lots of people work in Groundhog Day situations and they keep doing it, because that’s what they are paid to do.

IP

where is your evidence they stopped doing their job? Every day of the year they lock up people for breach of bail and warrants. Police were searching for Monfries on the day he killed that innocent woman. Once again the community was failed by weak as piss magistrates.

You are just going to have to take my word for it, as the documents have never found their way into the public domain. An inquest should have uncovered them (was there one?) and so perhaps would a trial, but he pleaded guilty. A full trial transcript might show it, but they don’t put those on the internet.

Basic point is he was known by the police to be in breach of his bail conditions (in as many as three separate ways) in the days before the fatal incident, but remained at large even though his whereabouts would have been very easy to determine.

IP

So to paraphrase: “I don’t know what I’m talking about, I have no evidence to back up my claims and have had no involvement whatsoever, but take my word for it.” Rightio then…

Your transparent and puerile attempts at trolling and derailing threads is getting pretty old. You got a bite out of me this time (which was obviously your aim) but I’ve got no interest in feeding the trolls any further. At least not in this thread. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Hehehe, IP is good at that. He told me I was wrong one despite me actually showing him a relevant document as to what I was talking about. When I mean relevant, I don’t mean a report in a newspaper either like he was throwing up.

& then I find out later by his own admission that he is not even involved in the sport/hobby like I am.

Armchair expert.

It’s going to be a bit difficult to carry out his festival director duties without a driver’s licence. Besides giving him the job without putting it out into the jobs market, is Katie Gallagher planning to provide him with a driver?

It is a pity about Jorian. He’s a talented arts administrator, whose strong ability to pull together people of various disciplines into festivals and smaller events (like the original bunch of fives and the various Smiths Alternative shows) is quite spectacular.

He’s also quite capable of ridiculously poor judgement when not being an arts administrator. His work at City News was marked by frequently picking fights with people in existing institutions, eventually escalating into being a gadfly against the Legislative assembly. His work with 2CC displayed even poorer judgement (does anybody think the kind of things he were saying in any way went with the station’s audience demographic)?

He’s in desperate danger of becoming the local version of Bob Ellis, which would be sad. Plenty of very good arts adminstrators are very capable of being anonymous. Perhaps that would suit him better.

I had no idea who this guy is either.

Strange though that he could organise a festival but not get his act together enough to renew his licence or turn up to court on time – twice. These non-appearances are very odd as he no doubt has a highly paid lawyer at his side who should be ensuring he turns up to court.

I would serve him right to get locked up on a Saturday afternoon – no court until Monday. That might be a valuable lesson and encourage him to check his busy schedule for important things like court.

Not necessarily Irishpete. If he’s clever ….

Driving unlicensed, getting the date wrong for a court apperarance, he doesn’t sound very clever.

Winning!

I wonder if Jorian is suffering from some form of early-onset dementia – after all, he seems to forget a hell of a lot of things that are rather important…..like, keeping his drivers’ licence current, and when to turn up to court (twice!).

Didn’t you hear? RiotACT participants are holier than thou, and have the right to cast the first stone. 🙂

Not necessarily Irishpete. If he’s clever he’ll hand himself in early morning Tue-Fri so he can be processed and put before the court. Magistrate will probably want some cash up front to assure attendance and lets face it, you have to consecutively kill two nuns to get bail refused in the ACT. The problem for Jorian is, hell have two fail to appears on his CV. Should he find himself arrested in another jurisdiction (IE: a random traffic stop in Qld while this warrant is in existence), or some future slip up, he can whistle for bail. I do know that Jorian said on radio that Prison Officers were bringing drugs into the AMC. I am guessing he really doesn’t want to be depending on them for his 24/7 well being….

True, if he hands himself in at the courthouse, but first he has to get there… Surely the border guards will pick him up if he drives or catches a train? Or the AFP at the airport if he flies?

I’m being sarcastic of course. They don’t try very hard to catch people who have warrants out for them r who are in obvious breach of their bail conditions – ajust sk Justin Monfries. Actually, Jorian can ask him if he gets remanded…

Jorian will hand himself in at city station in the morning, be quickly processed and sent to court. That’s if he doesn’t just go straight to court with his lawyer.

If he has any sense he will remove the Facebook post where he is telling the Beak he is going to extend his holiday!

Looks like he’s gonna spend a night in the Watchhouse when he gets back to Canberra.

Can Our Jorian have a Mully please?

I’ve only lived here for 10 years, who is Jorian Gardner?

Ohh a guy who used to own a bookshop. Mate not sure he is famous enough to get his own DUI article on RiotACT… Especially as I had to Google him.

If window washers get top coverage on the Canberra times website and here, why not good old Jorian?

johnboy said :

More a personality than a celebrity I’d say.

And a more useful contributor to society.

Jorian has done a lot more than own Smith’s. He’s done a lot of work in the arts (most notably with the Fringe Festival), and in the media over the years, and has caused plenty of controversy in his time.

He also is the first person ever to have ever given me a paying gig as an artist, and I imagine I’m far from the only writer/performer in Canberra in that position.

What I’m saying is that he is well known.

It’s understandable you might not know him, but he is a local celebrity of a sort (in as far as Canberra does have local celebrities).

More a personality than a celebrity I’d say.

The Canberra Times is reporting it somewhat differently:

“Magistrate Robert Cook said it was the second time he had missed a court date, and issued a warrant for Gardner’s arrest.

Give him a break. He was probably on holiday last time he missed a court date and had a warrant issued for his arrest.

Oscar archly observed that “the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about”, but things didn’t end too well for him, either.

Mike Bessenger11:22 am 08 Nov 13

I wonder if Jorian is applying for Mike Welshs job. That’s right, he already burnt that bridge.

So when did “normal, rational person who is capable of seeing through a self-serving, responsibility-avoiding rant” become redefined as a “hater”?

Who is this guy anyway?

Like any Canberra personality, Jorian won’t be known to everyone (seriously – Rhys Muldoon is actually one of “our” best-known celebrities), Jorian he is extremely well known in certain circles and it is to be expected the Canberra Times would run with such a story.

As for his post, I don’t have a problem with it. I mean, if he’s on holidays, he probably wants to make a statement so he can turn his phone off and relax before his return.

Finally, whilst driving without a licence is clearly the wrong thing to do, IMHO we are all human.and the courts – not the RiotACT readers – will make the official findings. I see nothing wrong with Jorian making a statement to clear the air.

I’ve only lived here for 10 years, who is Jorian Gardner?

I hope he is not expecting sympathy simply because he is apologising to his mum and friends.

sorry mate driving unlicensed and as a repeat offender, I hope you get the book thrown at you.

Pork Hunt said :

If he is driving with an expired license he should get done for unlicensed if under the limit. To be subject to a .00 limit in that case is just wrong. The law should not be allowed to have it both ways.

Nothing wrong with that law. He is an idiot.

Needed the same kinds of friendies in high places that a certain Kate Carnell made good use of!

So jorian, a pre-emptive confession and self-flaying with wet tissue paper will make it all better? Do you really think that a snappy apology to Mummy and your friends is going to save you from the collective hive mind?

How Canberran.
