The Minister for Children and Young People, Joy Burch, has announced her plans to make changes to the bail system to have less young people held in detention while awaiting trial.

Joy has released a discussion paper outlining her ideas and had this to say:

One of the planks for reform identified in the discussion paper is the need for better support
for young persons and police in relation to after-hours arrests for alleged offences or breaches
of bail, to prevent young persons being unnecessarily remanded in custody because they are
unable to find suitable accommodation and acceptable supervision outside business hours.

“Some Young People are being put into detention for breaches of bail, rather than the offence
they were originally charged with,” Ms Burch said.

“We know that periods of detention can be extremely disruptive for young persons in a range
of ways, and by improving supports such as accommodation and establishing contact with
family members we may be able to reduce the incidence of bail refusals.”

The models canvassed are designed to support these vulnerable young people to meet their
bail conditions in the first place, while remaining in the community.

“If we support them to meet their often stringent conditions, there is evidence that re-offending
is reduced while they are on bail.

Are horrible young scrotes locked up actually a problem?

Submissions can be made until 15 April 2011.

This woman is an idiot and shouldn’t hold this portfolio. She is so far out of touch, it’s not funny.

Not just out of touch, way, way out of her depth. Labor’s weakest link (in a chain made of paper).

…..and all the other links in the paper chain are made out of damp tissue paper!

…and used toilet paper (which is why the Labor pollies are full of s***).

Bimberi centre has better conditions than most Nursing homes in Canberra. They pretty much getting off scot free now days.

We (ie everybody who is not a member of the ACT government) also know that lack of periods of detention for these young people can be extremely disruptive for everybody else whose house they break into, or car they steal or who is assaulted by them etc etc.

Witness the recent escapades of CRK.

Is Joy opening up her house to disadvantaged youth?

>Keep locking them up I say.

totally agree.

I think it would be better to make a week in youth detention compulsory for all kids who are charged with various offences.

Excellent idea Joy. While were at it, why not give the parents of these poor souls airfares and tickets to Disneyland???

With staff continually getting bashed in Bimberi, let’s release the little mongrels into the streets where WE can become the victims. Staff at Bimberi are trained to handle these inbreds – I, for one, am not.

And lets not forget the Clea Rose incident. She was killed by a recidivist car thief. He had breached his bail conditions on at least a dozen occasions by stealing cars. Not for breaking curfews or being late to church – he was stealing cars whilst on bail – killing an innocent woman in the process!!!

Keep locking them up I say.
