In an announcement symptomatic of the dismal failures of the Rudd Government Julia Gillard has announced that she’s formed a committee.

Eventually, assuming the government doesn’t forget about it or change its mind, this could lead to an Australian National Workers’ Memorial being built here in Canberra.

Senator Cameron will chair a committee comprising Senator Gary Humphries (Liberal Party), Senator Kate Lundy (ALP), Senator John Williams (National Party) and Senator Rachel Siewert (Australian Greens) that will guide the establishment of the memorial.

The Deputy Prime Minister urged the Committee to consult widely with the community in developing designs for the Memorial.

With Labor now far to the right of John Howard we’re not entirely sure Senator Lundy will survive a committed Greens push come October, but we always like finding a new memorial mouldering in a lonely corner of the lakeshore.

I saw what I thought was a workers memorial recently on London Cct, but it was actually a gang of road workers standing around leaning on their shovels.

you must have stood and watched a long time to realise that one of them moved – probably to duck off to the local chippy to get smoko tucker for them all in a box, uber-sugared coffees in a cardboard tray… or was it lack of pigeon shit gave it away?

Workers have never had it better in this country.

…how did Workchoices make things ‘better’ for workers? How has Rudd’s partial removal of Workchoices improved things? It seems both state and federal jurisdictions have maneuvered in a manner that allows them to call any attempt by workers to stand up for their rights “industrial action” and fine workers accordingly.

“we’re not entirely sure Senator Lundy will survive a committed Greens push come October” – what an amazing claim. The ALP has easily gotten more than a full senate quota in the ACT in recent elections (1.2 quotas in 2007) and almost twice as many first preference votes than the Greens (whose numbers were inflated in 2007 by ALP voters giving them their first preference in an attempt to unseat Humphries – it’s reasonable to assume that these voters second preference was for the ALP). Moreover, Labor’s opinion poll results in national polls have been consistently better than what the party received in the 2007 election.

Workers have never had it better in this country.

Gotta love this place and its enthusiastic support for the Greens. First Gary Humphries claimed to be at risk of losing his seat to the greens, and now it’s Kate Lundy. Those Greens are certainly gearing up their campaign from their supporters.

Wow, different people thinking different things! Who’d have thought it!

Thanks, Gerry-Built. Couldn’t have put it better myself.

I guess the idea of this statue is that pigeons will get to shit on workers in a symbolic representation of how Governments have over the past 15 years…
