Jumping to conclusions...

Is it just me, or isn’t it a ridiculously huge mental leap to assume those who sent the hazard to the Indonesian embassy are Corby supporters? Think about the anthrax attacks in the US, due to the social climate people assumed it was an arabic/Bin Laden inspired terrorist attack. After all that it turned out to be an opportunistic seppo who obviously saw it as the best time to do it and have a legitimate scapegoat.

I’m about 100% sure that the person who sent that package to the embassy couldn’t care less about what happened to ol’ schappas and just saw it as a great opportunity.

Gotta love a strongly built media bandwagon though – it’s carrying all of Australia’s blind journos at the moment

Well… look at the impact of the letter/hoax, and all the ones that have followed it. They have made things worse for Corby and have possibly damaged Aus/Indo relations, and certainly done some harm to public opinion of Aus in Indo.

Perhaps it was done by… ISLAMIC TERRORISTS. Smart ones, who figured out what the impact would be, and that among other things, people would not be looking to them because of the Corby angle.

I’m just speculating based on effects/benefits. It’ll probably turn out to be some right-wing survivalist nut from WA…

It is sobering to note that they STILL haven’t arrested ANYONE for the anthrax hoaxes in the US.

(side note – i was actually a victim of one of those hoaxes – it was extremely unpleasant)

Lol being that as it may as well as being about a society that does not want to give up it’s muskets – what a great comment used in the same sentence as ‘enforced weapons amnesty’…

I think objective journalism has failed. It was killed by liars. Any system which requires you to question and quote a person who you know to be lying (all the interested parties in public affairs) has nothing left to offer us.

Honest opinion is in many ways preferable as long as biases and interests are declared.

Anyway it’s warming to see the indo media making even bigger dickheads of themselves than ours.

Issue all the travel advisories you like, you rotten pricks.

hey Maelinar..

go watch “Bowling For Colombine” and see what Mike Moore has to say about us as a society living in FEAR, how the media/govt controls the fact that we live in a constant state of anxiety etc etc. He, of course has his own spin on it and there are enough people to say his edit style makes others appear to say and do things not in context, HOWEVER, being that as it may as well as being about a society that does not want to give up it’s muskets…. it also fits quite nicely to what you are saying there about social research.

I’m surprised that the press, PM, anybody else who wants to talk, seems to be making references to this note in the ‘I’ve read it and know it’s contents intimately’ tone, but still manage quotes like “he sees no reason why it is not related to Schapelle Corby”…

Come on which one is it ? Related/Unrelated ?

The contents of the note seem to be taking as much time as the boffins down at the lab in identifying just what kind of white powder it was, unless it’s pertinent to a criminal investigation they should be releasing the information ASAP to dispel the public lynch-mobs that are forming

Or is the real question that the Govt like holding the public in a state of hype and suspense just like Ray Martin and the pussy-bum face lady (sorry forgot her name) on TT ?

There’s probably a ‘link’ in there somewhere to social research that has found that a society kept in a state of hype consumes more fuel and smokes more (hence more revenue in taxes)…

But what’s in a link ?

Indonesian Embassy > Bali > SC ?

I’ll go get the pitchfork, you grab the flaming torches and some sturdy rope !

And we all love the site for it.

“Does that last point include this website? Not so much, I wouldn’t have thought – it’s never really pretended to be some kind of impartial, independent media outlet… “

and we’re kinda proud of that fact too

Bugger, they’ve changed (or updated) the story. Before it said that he had stated that it was after reading the note.

The report states that there was a note accompanying the ‘non-dangerous’ bacteria, however it’s contents remains a mystery. Our fearless Prime Miniature has said “he sees no reason why it is not related to Schapelle Corby”.

Make what you will of that, I think it’s more likely attributable to a tsunami donator horrified to discover how the Indo Government wants to spend the relief funds.

This was all I could find on ninemsn —

Embassy bacteria not dangerous: police
The bacteria sent in a suspicious package to the Indonesian embassy in Canberra is not believed to be dangerous, police say.

I’ll have a look.

go to ninemsn.com.au. The PM says there is a link, and he has seen the translated letter, so presumably he knows what he’s talking about.

Canberra_unsung_hero2:26 pm 02 Jun 05

There’s no indication at this stage why it was sent,so no “linkage” can be made at this time. ( maybe later ).

I was talking to a fellow at the local sandwich shop at lunchtime who is a part-time security guard. He said that whoever posted that letter to the Embassy should be shot.(and he was serious ).

I thought his idea of “punishment” for the perpetrator was somewhat harsh…..

Point 3 shouldn’t really say “everyone else” – of course people are entitled to their opinions, and to share them. People in power, and in positions where this might be interpreted as more than just expressing a personal opinion (for example, Ms Corby’s lawyers) are the ones who really need to keep quiet until they have all the facts.

Basically, 3 thoughts:
1) You’re right, it’s stupid to jump to conclusions without all the details.
2) It’s not, however, a totally unreasonable hypothesis, and if I were a betting man, I’d at least put couple of bucks on it.
3) The media and everyone else who’s putting forward guesses like that as fact, or even assumptions (usually on their part) should shut the hell up. It’s not their place to hypothesise – not that you’d think it looking at the media today. They should simply be presenting facts (in an ideal world etc).

Does that last point include this website? Not so much, I wouldn’t have thought – it’s never really pretended to be some kind of impartial, independent media outlet…
