Just how many bakeries can one shopping centre intersection support?

I was struck by this scene the other day. It’s the ground floor of the Canberra Centre, just outside the Supabarn.

You’ve got a Dobinson’s, a Bakers Delight, and a Golden Crust all within a croissant’s throw of each other.

On top of that, if baked goods are your thing, there’s a Muffin Break, a Donut King, and I’m pretty sure Supabarn does a selection of baked things too.

Choice is good, let the market decide and all that, but a shopping centre is hardly a free market.

Is this overkill? Or would you like more bakeries crammed cheek by jowl?

Krispy Kreme is glorious. I’ve never been so happy to have type 2 diabetes.

ant, you can do exactly that outside the Coles in Gungahlin. I think it’s a Donut King, but it might be a Wendy’s, either way, it has the little conveyor belt and you can watch your waistline and their donuts expand before your very eyes. Yummo!

I remember when doughnuts used to be nice. There was a Woolworths in petrie plaza, where Centrepoint is now, and there was a doughtnut machine in the window, plopping out doughnuts into teh oil. They’d make a little journey through the oil, and then get dumped in the sugar/cinnamon mix at the end. A bag of those on a winter’s day was like being in heavan.

I cannot understand the popularity of those cold ones with icing on them. argh.

Holden, Johnboy, you have made this mans day.

I agree Holden, I am appauled that the same word is used to describe a ring of hot fresh battery, cinnamon-ey deliciousness, cooked fresh infront of your eyes and also a cold stale, preservative soaked abomination smothered in fat and icing.

Now, to start applying for jobs in civic.

Golden crust is cheapest if you don’t mind shit food (which I can’t stand). Otherwise 2$ cinamon scroll at Subabarn is the best buy
🙂

Can I get confirmation that there is now a DK in the canberra centre.

Confirmed. It’s near the entrance to Supa Barn.

Forget those other plastic things from the other chain, there’s nothing quite like a fresh cinnamon donut.

If you look closely you can see the pink donut king neon in the background of the photo.

Dobinsons Sausage Rolls FTW!! Godlike.

Can I get confirmation that there is now a DK in the canberra centre.

I worked in civic for 3 years and the thing I hated the most was the lack of hot, fresh cinnamon donuts. I now work in Dickson, where there is still no donuts.

Where is this fabled new Donut King?

A donut king !? Did they finally put a Donut King in the Canberra Centre !?

Excellent! Now the job of scrounging $2 together to buy 1 cinnamon donut.

I’m just addicted to frozen cokes/raspberries esp in the summer… Always hated having to walk down to McDonalds.

Although I don’t think DK are that expensive for one little cinnamon donut !? I know Krispy Kreme sure as hell is…

Golden Crust is about 30% cheaper than Bakers Delight I have noticed…

I really don’t like Bakers Delight Bread anyway… whilst Golden Crust is no Cournoucopia/Silo it’s a far cry better than BD, not to mention the folk at Golden Crust are much much nicer (I go there fairly regularly when running errands into that part of the city).

I guess so long as they pay rent QIC don’t mind. Either that, or they’ve applied some US Bank Management ideology to the Canberra Centre Baking Industry.

It always seems like a long walk to find lunch.. and if u change ur mind u have to walk to the other side.. and hence u just have what ur near!

Yeah, it’s been like that since Bakers Delight opened up (GC was there first). And yet BD is always the one with more people buying from it, it boggles my mind…

A shopping centre is hardly a free market.

An intriguing claim jonhboy, I’m interested to hear what you mean by this.

On the topic at hand, anyone who spends more than about 15 seconds pondering this, needs to march themselves to the poor part of town, and get to work improving peoples lives.

…actually now that I think about it, I’d advocate that for everyone.

I don’t mind having 3 bakeries in the one centre. But they could at least have spaced them out a bit more.

Let them eat cake!

Where was the “Just Right” option for the poll?

I feel ripped off. Though more couldn’t hurt I guess. 🙂

I love bread, me.

There can never be too many bakeries if they are good and have unique products.

It’s a shopping centre; who cares? If they can make it profitable, good for them. If not, they will soon go broke, and it will make no difference to anyone except their competition. What a stupid poll!

Dobinson’s are completely different from the chain/mainstream bakeries, which is a good thing. Re the photo, it’s a bit sad that people choose to sit in those noisy, barn-like, glary places to eat and drink. Shopping mall food courts give me the willies.

Although I will defend Dobinson’s and Bakers Delight being right next to each other… they don’t sell anything the same!

haha, i love how the couple at the table, are staring at you with a “wtf???” expression…
