ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations team is continuing its homicide investigation after a 27-year-old Canberra man was found dead in Braddon early yesterday morning (Thursday, August 4).

Police were called to a location outside Northbourne Flats on Northbourne Avenue, Braddon around 6.40am. The man’s body was found lying under a tree in a grassed area about 15 metres from the roadway.

The man had suffered extensive and severe head injuries. Police believe that a sharp edged object was used to inflict the injuries.

The man is yet to be formally identified. A post-mortem is expected to be conducted on Monday (August 8).

Police enquiries indicate the victim had caught a Greyhound bus from Melbourne on Wednesday evening and had arrived at the Jolimont Centre at 4am yesterday (Thursday, August 4). Early investigations indicate the man called a family member before walking north along Northbourne Avenue.

Detective Superintendent Brett McCann wished to stress to the public the importance of reporting any information, no matter how small, to Crime Stoppers immediately.

“Even if you think what you know about this investigation is not relevant, let police make that decision. You may hold the missing piece we need to solve this homicide,” Detective Superintendent McCann said.

Information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

Where do you get your info from??? This is great!

Not that great! Whilst my story might all be true (came from someone at the office mentioned), the police only mention a machete and baseball bat being involved: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-08-08/second-braddon-murder-arrest/2829388

How about this for a rumour?

Sometime earlier the night of the death, a metal pole was stolen from out the back of an office building a block or so up Northbourne Ave. The curved pole was bolted onto the ground at one end, and the other end had a plate to which was mounted a swipe card sensor. (IE, it had a sharp edges at each end.)

The pole was seen not far from the body, and the police have taken possession of it.

Not sure if it’s related but I just drove along Northbourne Ave and spotted something noteworthy. In the flats just up from the location where the young man was found (and on the opposite side of the road) there was a number of forensic people in white garb including police in plain marked vehicles looking very busy.

CPO’s twitter says- “Search warrant executed @ Turner flat re homicide investigation after public tipoff. Forensic analysis @ flat. Ring Crimestoppers 1800333000”

People calling police operations to complain about a Riotact headline. Well done, imbeciles.

If the offender is caught I’ll bet he/she’ll use the old diminished responsibility due to being under the influence of drugs defence or the default had a bad childhood defence.

If he/she does not serve time for this crime i really hope something happens to that person – something like the Asain vs Skinhead scene in Romperstomper. 80 asians come out of every nook and cranny and kick the crap outta them. – How being off your guts on something is a defence is beyond me

RE: Changes to the Headline to comply with community sensibilities
Its still there, in the URL.
Its the downside of using WordPress’ silly auto-generated urls, just change back to the?p=num and your admin is lower.

People calling police operations to complain about RiotACT headlines aren’t reading the URI.

Probably took a shortcut or just got lost and it turned out to be lethal. 8 hours on a bus and then bludgeoned to death by some local meth head for a few bucks (could have been a racially motivated attack as well).

Very sad. Hopefully the police catch the scum that did this.

Poor bugger.
A big shame a lot of us just assumed he was some druggo, considering it happened outside druggo central.

Whats the bet the ‘person’ who did this was so drugged out they can’t even remember. Hope they get caught soon.

Not formally identified, but they know he was 27. That’s pretty tricky, yeah?

I’m guessing the formally part means they know who he is, but just need a relation/friend/significant other to identify the body?

New theory: Victim walking up Northbourne to meet his family member, as walked past flats, a fight or something was going on (perhaps with a woman and her partner) so the victim interviened and … the end.
