One time Canberran Justin Heazlewood (aka The Bedroom Philosopher) just got played as part of the TripleJ Hottest 100.

This is his effort “Northcote (So Hungover)”.

Any other Canberrans making the list this year?

Here’s an amazingly innovative new concept for you! The process of recording music allows you listen to, and develop an appreciation for, music that was performed when you were very young, even before you were born!!! You can actually listen to music that was written hundreds of years ago if you wish!! It’s sorta like the audio equivalent of reading an old book! It’s a wild idea, I know, but you should check it out!

When I was a kid in the ’70s the predominant musical form on commercial radio was disco crap like KC and the Sunshine Band. I was young and stupid, but not that stupid, so I looked around for something better and discovered American blues (Lightnin’ Hopkins), Australian blues based pub rock (Angels), British blues bands (Early Fleetwood Mac), American punk( Richard Hell and the Voidoids), British Punk (the Pistols), reggae (Bob Marley, rest his soul), even classical (Pachelbel’s Canon in D…I know, I know)….

My point, after all that bullshit, is that my age and the age of the music I enjoy are not necessarily correlated.

My point in the original post was to provide a very brief list (forgot Billy and the Aztecs, dammit) of great Australian bands, and contrast them to the Bedroom Philosopher thing, which I thought was pretty poor all around. I know it was a satire, but I thought it wasn’t great satire, and not very musically valid either.

Grumble bloody mutter mutter…Nurse, where’s my medication…How do I turn off this electrical light thing…I can’t find the wick….what did I do with the chamber pot…everyone here seems to be a crazy dude…mutter mutter..

Early Triple J was never pure-Nirvana. It had Alanis Morrisette too.

That ain’t early! As a spotty-faced almost teenager visiting Sydney I eagerly tuned into the widely publicised first broadcast of the brand new JJ (yes, double-J, not triple-J). I think it was ’72, or perhaps ’73, and they played “You Just Like Me ‘Coz I’m Good in Bed” by the Skyhooks. I was absolutely delirious with excitement at the idea of an ABC station playing such an astoundingly naughty song. Those dudes were bad, before people were called dudes, or bad came to mean “good”.

The point is, exciting new music can’t be found on JJJ (apart from the occasional gem).

So you HAVE found exciting new music on JJJ.

Is your memory that bad that you recall everything being played on JJJ in (insert year/era here) being a golden smash alterno-hit? Were you a big fan of – picking a few songs from early Hottest 100s – “Masses Like Asses” by Def FX, “Boom Shack-a-lack” by Apache Indian , or “Who Farted?” by The Vaughans? All eminently forgettable – and I’m a huge Def FX fan!

Early Triple J was never pure-Nirvana. It had Alanis Morrisette too.

But, I hear you say “on average, it was better then!” Ask a 20 and a 40 year old how many good songs were released this year. The 20 year old will tell you twice as many as the 40 year old. Same story 20 years ago, same story in 20 years.

My memory is fine thanks. You mentioned a few pretty ordinary songs from yesteryear, but most of the Hottest 100 yesterday was woeful. Just my opinion – JJJ is 90% crap (don’t I sound like an old fart, just like I used to think my parents were).

I’d have to admit I’m more a fan of guitar driven music rather than synthezisers/sampling etc. Each to their own. If you like JJJ, more power to ya 🙂

I’d like to go on record and repeat myself…AGAIN as a 19yr old, I think its all rubbish.

Spot on.

+1

I’m thinking you’re missing just one word ‘derivative’

as in Music these days is terrible/pretentious/repetitive/boring/derivative/crap … how long can it keep covering itself?

I am, your argument is invalid.

If you can’t find exciting new music today, it’s because you’re not looking for it.

Perhaps Thoroughly Smashed and co think the early 90s was a renaissance period for music? This song puts up a credible argument against that line of thought in more ways than one: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/safran/mp3/university_elevator_music.mp3

Seriously, that crap is classed as music. I remember why I stopped listening to JJJ in the mid 90s now. I will leave it for the ‘I am so classy, be an individual and be like me’ crowd. The same ones who call those dodgy sculptures around town ‘art’ and hang around Kingston and Manuka.

Back in my day all the music we listened to was grounbreaking/wild/legendary/classic.
Music these days is terrible/pretentious/repetitive/boring/crap
Kids these days are lazy/stupid/naughty/disrespectful.

I enjoyed this muchly. Hipster scum, die the lot of you.

Indeed, nothing is as good as it used to be.

“I’m So Postmodern” is a cack, though.

Triple j is complete rubbish.

Agreed. Either I’m getting too old, or the music they play on JJJ these days is 90% crap. Listening to the hottest 100 today I was struck by how mediocre a lot of the songs were.

Just to test this for myself recently I listened to the first few Hottest 100s and sure enough, today’s JJJ is more or less terrible in comparison.

The Easybeats. Lobby Lloyd and the Coloured Balls. Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs. The Masters Apprentices. AC/DC. Redgum. Goanna. Australian Crawl. Etc…

And this pretentious shite. I listened to it in disbelief, and then made the mistake of clicking on the “I’m so postmodern” clip thinking that it had to be better, and came within a hairs breadth of breaking a window so that I could obtain a shard of broken glass with which to stab myself in the heart and end it all.

This is a sad, sad day for Australian music.

I think you might have missed the point.
