The ABC has a story on failed efforts in the early morning to send a Wanniassa ATM into orbit sans its cash.

A garbage collector alerted police around 5:30am when he noticed abandoned tools near the ATM and wires coming out of the machine.

Police bomb experts attended the scene to ensure there were no unexploded devices.

This follows a more successful effort in Phillip last year.

UPDATED: The AFP media release is also online.

ACT Policing is investigating an incident at the Wanniassa shops early today in which thieves attempted to gain access to an ATM.

Police were called to the location around 5.50am today (Thursday, March 12) after a passer-by reported seeing a wire protruding from an ATM outside the Wanniassa Supermarket. Some tools were also visible near the ATM.

On further investigation, there was some evidence of an attempt to forcibly gain access to the ATM although it is not known whether the attempt was successful.

Police immediately sealed off the area so that the SRS Bomb Response Team and AFP Forensic Services could conduct an assessment.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen any suspicious persons or activity around the shopping centre in Langdon Avenue, Wanniassa early this morning to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

maybe it was someone just ticked off about the new charges ?

Mmmmm, first the worst. Here goes.

Glad to hear the crooks failed.

Unfortunately they didn’t get hurt in the attempt. If they did, it would be the punishment they deserved but wouldn’t get from the Courts.

And finally, a crook will get hurt sooner or later attempting to get a free K RUDD sponsorship payment.

Fortunately an AFP officer will earn his pay by locking up the injured fool.
