I did the same Rollersk8er but I thought it safer to cross the very slow moving GDE. A bit of excitement for the journey home!!

Me too – rode over the hill about 20m from the closed bike path. Given they didn’t evac the houses or close the GDE, both just a few hundred meters from the site, I’m guessing it wasn’t that bad.

Whenever these things happen, I always wonder what compensation the contractors must pay. Presumably they must pay for the actual damage, but what about the many other people affected?

As the contractors (or the company hiring out the contractors) insurance would cover any of the damage I guess they’d also have to pay other relevant compensation claims if they deemed them legitimate after they reviewed them, such as damage to surrounding buildings, health issues caused by the accident, businesses being forced to close, etc. Pretty much anything that legitimately deserves financial compensation as a result of the contractors mistake. I’d bet there’d be a fine to pay too.

If any other businesses were affected financially or forced to close due to the incident then they could probably also claim compensation under their own business interruption insurance.

It’s obviously not serious enough to warrant something as urgent as evacuation. If someone tried to claim compensation because the closed road made them take a detour home then they’re sooks.

No evac required – but would have been nice to know the road (Ellenborough) and bike path were closed – probably still are?? About 10 of us on bikes cut across the hill – and popped out in full view of the repairers and cops – and nobody said a thing. Rode straight by the hole in the ground and kept on going.

ACT Policing Traffic twitter account never bothered to reply to my query, and there’s still no traffic on Ellenborough at 19:35 (it’s just beyond my backyard, most peaceful night in years!).

Still closed, after 18:00 now.
