ACT Policing is investigating an arson attack in which three vehicles were set alight in a Kambah car park overnight (Monday June 27).

About 3.00am police attended a car park on Ashby Circuit, Kambah, in response to vehicles on fire at that location. ACT Fire Brigade (ACTFB) was in attendance and extinguished the vehicles on fire, two of which were completely destroyed and a third believed to be a write off.

Approximately eight other vehicles in the car park had also been broken into. Fire damage to the vehicles is believed to be in excess of $60,000.

In a separate incident, police pursued a vehicle through southside suburbs after receiving a call from a couple in Torrens who were woken to the sound of their vehicle being broken into in Mackay Crescent. The couple saw a red hatchback drive away from outside their house shortly after they were woken. Police also received a number of other calls in relation to vehicle break-ins in Torrens and suspected the occupants of the red hatchback to be involved.

Police pursued a vehicle matching this description through Torrens, Phillip and Mawson, but lost sight of the vehicle at the intersection of Hodgeman Street and Shackleton Circuit in Mawson.

Police are continuing to make inquiries into the vehicle fires and break-ins and would ask anyone who may have seen people acting suspiciously in the suburbs of Kambah and Torrens to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

…I tried to phone them a few hours later and was told that they were both on leave and when I challenged the person on the phone I was abused. I gave the rego number of the theives ute and and address to the neighbour who then followed it up with the police who did nothing. In the following weeks a few more cars were stolen and burnt in close proximity. No one cares, really.

Email CPO ACT and ask him to explain why this happened. Im sure he will be interested to hear this.

I was woken up by a noise 2.00am a while ago and discovered some “locals” stealing the neighbours car. I phoned the cops and told them they would catch these dudes read handed if they came immediately. They said “we don’t have any resources” Thirty minutes later a fire engine arrives down the street and puts out the inferno that was once the car. The coppers turn up the next day to interview me but didn’t wait long enough for me to answer the door so they left a card. Sounds about right from the coppers… But watch out if your speed drifts 5km/h over, they’ll want to know you then…

Yes watch out, when you phone they also update your details, just in-case you haven’t paid that “5Km over fine”. Tickets in the mail.

Yeah, Kambah bashing! I’m with you, I’d much prefer to have a car worth heaps but owe the bank >$20k! Actually no thankyou. I’m quite happy with my 14 year old Subaru that I’ve owned outright for some time now.

I’m pretty happy with my 20 year old subaru. In fact, I bought another one on the weekend, because I needed a speedo cable, and it came as a package deal with a whole car….

And when you pull the seepdo cable out I’m sure there are other wankers out there willing to burn the car for you.

And just for the record, I wasn’t really bashing Kambah, more like the whole southside in general… Watch out Queanbeyan… You’re next 😛

It must be Kambah. 3 cars torched and 8 cars broken into and only $60,000 worth of damage. Sounds like they did the owners a favour!!

Ignorance is bliss eh, Kambah lost a bit of that reputation years ago. The lower classes can’t afford Kambah these days, owner or renting!

I laugh at Canberrans and their stupid keeping up with Joneses attitudes too, i almost own my house and own a still very good 10yo Falcon that i have looked after.

I think it’s because we desperately want to have a ghetto. Just to spice things up. All it shows is how utterly boring Canberra is! Suburbs with “bad reputations” here never seem to keep them for longer than a few years anyway. But the jokes about them linger for decades.
