Kambah High is Dead (as I knew it)

The Kambah High School (KHS for the acronym inclined) has been demolished.

Established in 1976, demolished in 2009. Kambah High school provided ‘educational services’ to the northern Tuggeranong area primarily. The school’s established motto was “Participation, Excellence, Equity, Relevance and Care ” or P.E.E.R.C.

Let us address these proclaimed words one by one:

1. Participation – I’m not sure of the exact records, but participation was often flaunted, students ‘wagged’ frequently. Get the hell out of there at recess, or at the latest, lunch. Hiding behind the graffiti wall until all teachers had gone inside, doing the ‘harry’ over Drakeford Dr at will, or just blatantly pissing-off to the Adventure Playground – chose your method. The place just wasn’t conducive to learning.

2. Excellence – The teachers: a top notch bunch of folk. Breeding excellence amongst peers and students. Having the sneaky ‘fag’ with the students behind the bike-racks, belittling individual students in front of the entire school at assemblies, dodgy teacher-student sexual relationships, general lack of care (from principal down), swearing and using foul mouthed language to, and in the presence of students and parents.
The students: excelled in wearing flannies, pussy-boots (desert boots), baggy trousers and adidas. Students also excelled in other traits. However, many individuals survived the KHS sh*t-hole and made their way through life into better things.

3. Equity – Ditto. Zero score.

4. Relevance – Somebody please elaborate on this. Is making sharp implements in woodwork classes relevant?
Making Ninja-Stars (for throwing)?

5. Care – Please expand.

I’m glad it has been demolished. The place looked like a jail, and in many ways it operated like one.

Hello everybody from Kambah High. Best wishes to you all.

PS: Would have liked to show more carnage in the photo’s, but wasn’t able to.

So considering that I too am a child of KHS I am going to go out on a limb and going from a few hints you dropped (ninja stars) I am guessing that you graduated in either 1986 or 1987, I did in 1988 and I do remember all but the teachers smoking at the bike racks, and you didn’t mention going down the drains.

come on now folks it wasn’t that bad, errrm when I actually showed up for class that is.. i think, cant really remember. anyway I wish they allowed ex inmates to have a swing with a sledgey and take a piece home

Really wasn’t that bad? Hmm. It WAS that bad. It was really bad.
It was a complete ‘shit-hole’. And I’m not sure I would like a piece of the demolished school itself. The only reason I could possibly imagine why I would want a piece of it, would be so I could piss on it. However, I have already done that many a time (whilst it was intact).

So easy to bag something when it’s gone. I just see the loss of this school as a loss for the community.

Frankly, the decision to get rid of Kambah High epitomises the pathetic (yet, sadly, common) government strategy of ‘allowing something to get run down, criticising it for no longer being ‘up to standard’, then slating it for demolition. Hell, as policies and strategies go, it’s cheap!

It is also extremely ‘classist’ for the government to consider Kambah to be the ‘ideal’ location for a polytechnic/vocational high. Kambah is a suburb the size of four suburbs, and has a mix of Canberrans like any other suburb, but ‘times 4’.

(PS Hint: watch your local parks – I am waiting for the ‘future development’ signs to emerge from the wings now that they are looking pretty daggy. I note there is already one of these signs on a children’s playground on the corner of Deamer and Heagney (Chisholm). Again, the pathetic ‘run it down’ strategy. If only they would plant decent shade trees in them to make these parks pleasant places).

miz – WTF are you talking a bout? I think it’s great that the current government is actually going about rebuilding such shit-holes. hmm.

I’m sad to see the school close. At least before, all of the little thugs were kept in one place. Now they’ll be spread across all of the other Tuggers High Schools. Great. I am just kidding of course. Sort of.

Ah yes, Kambah High School. The same school where students were part of a huge burglary and shoplifting ring in 1981. When police inspected their lockers they found what was described as an Alladin’s cave of stolen goods. The ACT Chief Magistrate at the time said he was shocked at the case and the behaviour of the students. When the school was closed many thought “good riddance to bad rubbish”.

As a student in the same year as these 3 people were I remember the magistrate also saying that all of Year 10 knew about it,which was a load of rubbish.

Can’t say I’m sorry to see it go.

Exactly!! Only 3 guys were actively involved in this burglary ring yet the whole year was tarnished by the incident. I know of a number of students who had problems getting jobs after Year 10 because of this yet those involved walked out of school (no custodial sentencing) and straight into jobs.

Sorry to see the place go. Had some great memories of the place.

…wth?

It really wasnt that bad!!

They are building a new “super school” – high tech and all that. I believe there’s one being built, or already built at Belconnen too.

Wow, I thought I had a bad time at that place but after that rant Bennett, I think you’ve trumped me! I’m with you, I’m quite glad they’ve knocked the place down. What are they going to do with the land anyone know?

Ha, pussy-boots, haven’t heard that in years! Why the hell did we call them that anyway?

new arse-cleaning clinic?!? What happened to the old one?

^^ +1. I’m sure all the Wanni high alumni can join in on that.
I would change where I attended school at all, these sorts of places instill people with character and life experience unattained at private schools (whether positive or not).

…us Kambah bogans are happy it has been demolished too…maybe they can build a new arse-cleaning clinic there…

Well that was weird.
