Kangaroo's in Canberra

An observation from the Canberra Centre yesterday;

The Kangaroo’s, that AFL team that play on the Gold Coast, had a stand next to Superbarn selling raffle tickets (where Oxfam and other charities have a stand occasionally). The prize? A new Mazda – Presumably to drive to the Gold Coast to watch their games.

While I applaud the club for trying to squeeze every drop of money they can out of Canberra, they didn’t seem to be doing to well.

Again, you talk sense. The ‘awks have got nothing tonight. See you on the hill on sunday – I’ll be the bloke sucking down 100 cans of Carlton Draught…

what saddens me as an afl fan is that with auskick going from hundreds to 3700 participants that surely indicates a growing base.

in ten years those kids will have $$ of their own.

for blokes like me who loved footy but couldnt make the 3rd 18 we watch and buy the afl product.

i remember peter mackenna coming to my school and handballing to me when i was 6.

im sure canberra kids feel the same way.

by abandoning long term development the afl will never grow beyond its base.

Slightly O/T, but does anyone seriously think the dorks have a better chance than a fart in a hurricane against the mighty Pies tonight?

The raffle you saw was the Kangaroos 2006 major raffle – a lazy 250,000 tickets at $5 each.

The more info that comes out of the move shows it was the AFL who pushed them to move through the desperate need for $, and as a blocker to the NRL Titans – with the Kangas playing at Carrara, Carrara has to stay an oval rather than being redeveloped into a rectangular ground for NRL…
