Kaon Bell one to be avoided when he's released in 2026

The Supreme Court has published a very disturbing sentence on the crimes of Kaon Bell a man with a track record of breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s homes and doing horrible things to them.

When the very experienced Justice Neils says “I hope that I never hear of a more serious case of unlawful confinement” we’re talking about a very, very bad egg.

Good luck to the blokes sharing the showers with him at the Hume Hilton.

I thought rape was a serious crime but it seems like in the ACT Aggravated Burglary is far worse. The sentences handed down in Aussie are really pathetic compared to the US. He probably would have got 60 years in the US.

It is a curious discovery I agree. Reading that shocked me greatly and I it will stay in my head a while I am certain. I know not why the sentence is less for a crime that seems more severe? One to look into. However the United states legal system and the amount of people in Jail there is one of the most complex and problematic issues for their government. It is not a good thing or any kind of example to try replicate. We are the lucky country and then some, and lets not forget the systems in place already that continue it. We do pretty good.

Those poor poor women. Makes me sick to think that this type of stuff is constantly happening to kids.

Nurture or nature?

I guess Kaon’s problems at school were nothing compared to his problems at home.

I wonder how many other familes are locked up together (Besides the Masseys) at the prison.

So he commits 11 crimes, with total maximum sentences of 135 years, and gets 15. Got off pretty lightly in my opinion. Should be never seeing the outside of prison again.

I got a different number when I added them together and accounting for the reductions on each one. No surprises there though. Not a strength of mine. In this case those sentences are served concurrenty for the most part and a small part consecutively. It didn’t say how much of each though? I am sure I missed something here with regard to the sentencing guidelines etc. I am not completely certain but I think sentences are served concurrently if the offences they are being sentenced for happend either on the same day or a close time frame. Not entirely sure about why that is though. More reading than I can handle tonight. There is something to do with totality in there that is relevant to the time being sentenced , though I know not how it all works precisely.

At risk of incurring the wrath of the internets, this is one case where up bringing really has resulted in one f¥€ked up individual.

I am not saying he shouldn’t be locked up for a long time for this, but is is a pretty good example of why society should make sure children are not kept of off school and raise by parents who sexually abuse there daughters over many years.

While I don’t disagree with what you say, I think at some point we have to accept a person may be bad because they’re bad and not just because they had a crappy upbringing. I don’t know if that’s the case here, but (from the reading of the linked judgement) this guy seems to have sociopathic traits and maybe he was always going to wind up doing the sort of stuff he’s done.

Regardless, he deserves his sentence.

There are some cases where the offending person is just so sick and beyond repair, they pose an unacceptable risk to themselves and the community. It will always be seen by the community as evil and any attempt to understand the offending behavior’s origin will never be given any real consideration. And why would you try too? That is another issue. There are offenders without any history of events to explain thier actions. This is true. Just a bad apple. But this is very uncommon. Almost invariably with crime of this type, there are explainations to find from the offender’s own living environment and history of it , how their psyche came to be. But its important to note that explainations, however valid, are not meant to be seen as what many believe to be excuses. Excuses isn’t a term used by anyone dealing with these very serious issues. It is not surprising the community want to have a simple and acceptable reason for this type of criminal offending, but it is a reality and its found across the world, indiscriminately. Out of mind , out of sight, or vice versa is a proverb befitting and common here. But its lazy and if you cannot stomach the chewy shit sandwich that life comes with in some ways, dont read about them. This is a really awful phenomenon that affects far too many. A simple answer doesn’t exist here too often, if at all.

I am speechless, I knew Kaon and two of his older siblings (lets calls them N and Y respectively) from high school/collage. I have lots to say about Kaon, I knew him very well.

This is so sad, Kaon had so much potential. He and all his siblings are really super intelligent people (maybe the smarted kids I ever met in school).

All three of them had about the hardest time (in terms of bullying/lack of social connection) at school you could imagine. The crap other kids did to them was the worst I ever saw. I imagine for them high school was hell on earth.

Kaon was quite a bit younger than me (he was skipped ahead like his siblings), I looked after and protected him at Canberra high for about 2 years (as best I could). I stood up for him continuously against bullies. Even though he was so much younger than us, my friends and I included him in our group so he would not be so lonely. My wife also went to Lake G with him and she said her friendship group did the same thing (nerds tend to look after their own I guess).

Sure the Bell kids always came off arrogant (it’s hard not be to arrogant when you’re that smart), but my friends and I always thought all three were good-hearted nice people, just kids having a rough time adjusting from being home schooled.

The surprising thing is Kaon always seemed the most well adjusted of his siblings (after all he was the least home-schooled). Maybe it was not the bullying that made him bad, maybe he was born broken… Then again, maybe all the dickhead popular & bogan kids broke him with their abuse/torments (seriously, they all had it really rough).

His older brother N (from my year) seemed to suffer much worse bullying than Kaon during highschool. Even then, what all of them went though was so horrible I still think if other kids were nicer (and teachers were more active in preventing bullying) Kaon might not have ended up so damaged/emotionally-disconnected enough to do something like this.

I’m glad Kaon got a significant sentence (his victim deserves nothing less). Kaon is obviously very messed up and sick and maybe should never be allowed to mingle with the rest of society.

Please don’t take this as excusing Kaon’s horrible crimes.

All in all, an extremely sad tale.

That’s the public school system for you. And nothing’s changed at Canberra High – there was at least one bullying-related suicide there last year. A girl in Year11. If there wasn’t such a conspiracy of silence on suicide, Canberra High might actually be forced to do something about their dysfunctional approach to discipline.

Um, Canberra high only goes to year 10

I had an encounter with this guy in 2008 …

Bullet dodged … well done.

The Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) comparison seems ever more apt. Presumably he’s left a trail of (as yet) undisclosed tragedy and grief in his wake.

I had an encounter with this guy in 2008, when (as I now know) he must have been not long out on parole. I was at the Press Club one night with a few friends, and he was there with a couple of people, and our two groups got talking.

He presented as clean-cut, bright, articulate, friendly and claimed he was trying to become a writer. As the evening wore on he latched onto me and suggested we go into town for a drink. I was ready to kick on, so off we went. He was charming and stimulating company, and now that I know about his TER score, it is a relief to know that I wasn’t imagining it.

At this point, I need to mention that I am old enough to be his mother, and while I flatter myself that I’m not too shabby for my age, he could not possibly have missed that. It is interesting that the unfortunate woman in this awful case was also considerably older than him (she had an adult child and he was in his mid-late 20s) – so it seems that Kaon might have mommy issues.

Anyway, with not a shred of romantic interest on my side, we kicked on for a bit and then I decided to call it a night. He then began to try to come home with me, or at least find out who I was and where I lived. Not having got this old by being without weirdo radar, I resisted politely. He begged and nagged and whined – it was quite sad – and no, I didn’t think for a moment it was because of my irresistible charms. He just came across as very needy and pathetic.

He pushed a scrap of paper into my hand with his name and phone number on it, and it was like something a 13 year old girl would have written – childish, rounded handwriting with a smiley face. It went in the bin when I got home.

Next time I was in Manuka, I saw him working as a waiter at MyCafe (and carefully avoided him seeing me). He worked there for quite a while, which I assumed was because he was still trying to be a writer.

Like a lot of people who commit horrible crimes, he is actually a sad case with no external signs of aggression. I have knocked about with much more overtly violent types who are not at all as dangerous as he is. Based on the escalation of his crimes, I have to agree with the judge that his prospects of rehabilitation are not good.

OpenYourMind1:24 pm 18 Jun 12

If this guy was bullied so much at school, I’d imagine his life is going to be particularly unpleasant in prison. I would also imagine that a person who can do such awful things and then fall asleep next to the victim is very likely to have maintained a pattern of domestic violence and expects his victims to take whatever he dishes out and simply accept it – either that or he has narcolepsy.

So he commits 11 crimes, with total maximum sentences of 135 years, and gets 15. Got off pretty lightly in my opinion. Should be never seeing the outside of prison again.

Simple really, lets reintroduce capital punishment.

It is indeed. I once witnessed a thoroughbred mare bleed to death in Queensland after a vet attempted a (clearly risky) surgery technique that involved putting a surgical knife through the mare’s vaginal wall to reach whatever was being operated on. Bleed? Gushed.

Lots of sex and knives where he’s going. Kaon will be in heaven.

PrinceOfAles9:37 pm 17 Jun 12

I worked with him about 7 or 8 years ago. He always seemed a bit creepy but wow!! Crazy!!

In amongst all the detail of what he did, the thing that stands out to me is that after ‘apologising’ he pulled her arm around him and went to sleep, almost as if what had happened was a fairly unremarkable occurrence, or was normal sex. God knows how long that night was for her. I think he got off lightly; and surely what he did with the knife could constitute attempted murder as well? It’s pure luck that she didn’t bleed to death while he was sleeping.

Though I love jokes I would never make one in this type of thread; it just seems to show a lack of compassion.

Apparently we are not to joke about serious matters…

You shouldn’t have to have a particularly finely calibrated brain to be able to tell the difference between saying something funny about a criminal idiot’s name – in a way that doesn’t mock his victim – and, for example, joking about a missing person who could well have suicided.

I was thinking glass half full and not suicided..

Fifteen years non parole is more than what most murderers get so try wrapping your head around that one!

If the victim shoots him in the face with a shotgun the day of his releave she’ll get off with no conviction due to mental anguish caused by him.

If what you are saying is that she could have got away when he “fell asleep”, what nonsense. She was clearly focused on staying alive. How about demonstrating some empathy and understanding for the full horror of what she experienced, rather than creepy trolling. I hope she can and does receive VOC compensation to the full amount for every one of those criminal acts.

Finally a sentence that is commensurate with the appalling depraved acts performed by this callous sadistic animal. Unfortunately the average prison sentence that convicted killers in this country receive is approx 13 years which leads me to the conclusion that life is cheap!

15 years seems pretty light on but I guess it could be worse. What a revolting freak. I wonder if they’re having family dinners together on the inside.
