Katter stands by gay marriage fancying Steven Bailey

The saga of Steven Bailey’s Canberra candidacy for Katter’s Australian Party has taken another turn.

Moves within the party to expel Steven for thinking gay marriage wouldn’t be that bad have been rebuffed by the great man himself according to The Australian:

ACT Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) senate candidate Steve Bailey will not be disendorsed, the party’s national executive confirmed after a meeting on Friday.

Mr Bailey has publicly said that he supports gay marriage but one of KAP’s core principals is that marriage is between a man and a woman.

KAP National Director Aidan McLindon says candidates are allowed to voice personal opinions, just not on behalf of the party.

“We have our core values and principles like every political party,” he told reporters at party headquarters in Brisbane.

“People can champion their opinions, but they can’t do it on behalf of the good party.

“Australians know what the party stands for and we’re not going to be distracted by these side issues.”

Mr McLindon had originally asked Mr Bailey to withdraw his candidacy but party leader Bob Katter overrode the decision.

Once you’ve seen him break into his weird giggle you can’t help with the labellings.

I heard a news report that his name was originally spelt Qatar and he is Lebonise.

Have you been lebonised lately?

Fair enough..I am not disagreeing with you completely. I just think that many people easily dismiss him with the ‘Mad Hatter’ title the media gave him.

The thing is that he has a very strange voice, it tends to fluctuate up and down mid-sentence and he has some personal affectations and facial movements which do may him look odd (even insane) .

If you watch real political shows like Insiders, MTP , Paul Murray, Australian Agenda or even 7.30 they are able to see past that and look at what he actually says. The 10 seconds on commercial 6.00pm TV Entertainment News show a completely different story…and I do believe that most of them just find it easier to continue to run with the Nutter persona and actively seek those grabs.

Look..I’m not a big fan of Katter, I agree with some of his views and disagree with many of his others…as I do with most politicians. I do believe that he has done a very good job of representing the interests of his electorate…and lets face it, that is what he (and all MP’s) are supposed to be elected for. So I applaud him for that and wish that more MP’s would actually do the same.

Do I believe that there is some big media conspiracy to discredit Katter? Of course not.

But do I think that commercial media often take the easiest and most entertaining route? Well…….

Maybe there’s more to the man than I imagine. Whateer he does, he’s certainly a successful politician who appeals to some people. It sure is hard to get past the public persona though. As you say, his mannerisms make him look odd. It’s the weird vocal inflection that really turns me off because it’s hard to listen to what he’s saying when you’re distracted by his speech pattern.

It sure would be odd to see Bob on TV after a bit coaching, coming across like Gareth Evans. 🙂

He’s just as Lebanese as all the other people born in Cloncurry, Queensland.

Which is to say, Half-Lebenese, Half Irish. Although people maybe confusing him with Bob Katter Sr, his dad, who was of full Lebenese descent, who held the seat of Kennedy from 1966 to 1990 – Bob’s had it from 1993 til now. His son, Rob Katter, is also a member of Queensland State Parliament, since last April.

Needless to say, three generation of men having the same name in the same electorate does wonders for their ability to get elected repeatedly.

He was in Duran Duran?

It makes you realise just how irretrievably mired in the 1950s the Laboral Party is.

As I stated originally, my opinion of the man has been formed by how he presents himself on radio and TV. I’ve never met him.

If he chose to behave like a reasonable and thoughtful person rather than a nutter then the media would have no opportunity to portray him as they do. If, as I interpret your comment, you believe that there’s some sort of concerted media campaign to only show the spittle-flecked segments of footage involving Mr Katter then I suggest you need to consider removing the tinfoil hat.

Every time I run across Bob on radio or TV he sounds loonier than ever. Seriously, he sounds deranged.

There’s a reason for that.

And that reason is because that is the way the media choose to portray him.

Nope. That’s the way he behaves. He can’t speak a couple of sentences without degenerating to red-faced, strangled ranting. That’s his choice, but it makes him look like a nutter more often than not.

So I assume you are basing this opinion on the many occasions you have met him and spent time with him and not just on what you have seen in the media?

Rob Oakeshott has a reputation as a windbag because that’s presumably how he chooses to portray himself. Tony Windsor has a reputation as a no-nonsense straight-shooter, because that’s the image he wants to portray. And Mr Katter comes across as a bit of an oddball, presumably because he thinks it will appeal to the people of the Deep North who vote for him.

Go Bob, stickin’ it to The Man in Canberra.

But he doesn’t contradict their core policies. Their core policies are busting the supermarket duopoly and general protectionism. They don’t wan’t to talk about gay marriage at all, because at least in Katter’s mind it’s a distraction from the real issues.

if you actually look,
http://www.ausparty.org.au/
they have their ‘core policies’ set out pretty clearly under ‘issues’.

If you actually look at the OP:

KAP National Director Aidan McLindon says candidates are allowed to voice personal opinions, just not on behalf of the party.

Please forgive me for misinterpreting what McLindon meant by “core policies”. Now if you’re still feeling that desperate to patronise someone, why not adopt a child ?

My understanding is that Katter’s brother is gay. How embarrassing for the poor man. The gay bloke I mean. If I had a brother like Bob I’d curl up and die.

Yep half-brother no doubt much to Bob’s chagrin.I can just imagine Bob thinking why couldn’t he just be normal like me 🙂

Bobkat is the weirdest character in a city where a 35 year old racist goes driving around looking for nice teenagers to drive over.

His staff is full of bright young women, he is super friendly to people he barely knows and works really hard. Why he expends his energy on hating his brother I will never understand.

Good news for Steven, and possibly worrying news for at least one of the other candidates.

If you happen to be reading this, Steven, Bruce is adorable, so keep him in the pics, and try for a few more of you in your (day job) work gear.

Guy says what he thinks even when not the party line. Obviously not made of the right stuff to be a politician.

Well thats good. At least he’ll get to keep his ‘at.
