Touché Ms Gallagher.

Following yesterday’s focus on women Health Minister Katy Gallagher is venturing where the sun don’t shine.

ACT Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, today marked Prostate Cancer Awareness Month by launching a new website for the ACT local support group.

The Minister also used the occasion to thank the Prostate Cancer Support Group ACT Region for their support for four nurses with their post-graduate study through La Trobe University. The further education has enhanced the nurses’ skills and knowledge specifically in prostate cancer care.

“September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and is an opportunity to raise the profile of prostate cancer,” Ms Gallagher said.

“It is also the perfect time to promote a healthy lifestyle and to encourage men to visit their GP for regular check-ups. Early detection and treatment of prostate cancer can dramatically increase the survival rate,” she said.

“Data from the Australian Institution of Health and Welfare suggests that prostate cancer is the second greatest cause of cancer deaths in men with almost 20,000 men expected to be diagnosed with the cancer in 2010. Almost 3,000 men will die as a direct result of prostate cancer during the same period. That’s why awareness and early detection is so important.

The new website is at prostate-cancer-support-act.net/.

So there we go.

Ms Gallagher went on to state;

“ACT Health recognises that men and boys do not have specific needs and challenges throughout their lives and men are not required to balance a number of commitments simultaneously, so we’re leaving the bottom probing stuff to charity.” Ms Gallagher said.

“By incorporating a gender perspective in health and health care, the aim is to ensure that women are not advantaged by virtue of their gender and that women are encouraged to actively participate in health decision making, whereas men can go whistle.”

A number of preliminary strategies are listed in the framework to guide the work necessary for achieving the objectives. A men’s health advisory network for the ACT isn’t seen as needed.

“Female consumer representatives will be encouraged to partner with ACT Health to raise awareness of issues that are at times not clearly visible or understood in the public domain, Men who needs ’em eh?” Ms Gallagher said.

“Planning for the delivery of health services to men of the ACT will ensure that the specific health issues experienced by women and girls are considered and addressed. Ms Gallagher said.

In 2009, it was estimated that the ACT female population was 177,892, with women making up just over 1% of the total ACT population.

Well, it might work if Canberra is, as I suspect, a city full of metros and others even further down the wuss path. Real men don’t fear death, least of all from some pissy little gland. And as for going to a doctor’s… real men only do that if it really hurts, or when man flu strikes.

Especially if the vet is going to stick his finger up your bum without at least buying you a drink first.

Well, isn’t that a shot in the arse?

It’s easy to say “but what about X” when someone wants to help Y. Doesn’t mean much, really.
