Katy Gallagher met with the Mayor of Beijing Wang Anshun today as a part of her StudyCanberra delegation visit to China.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher today met with Mayor of Beijing Wang Anshun as part of her StudyCanberra delegation visit to China.

“It is with great pleasure that I met with the Mayor of Beijing nearing the thirteenth anniversary of the Sister City Agreement signed in September 2000,” the Chief Minister said.

“The sister-city relationship has been of great mutual benefit, and one befitting the capitals of two nations with over 40 years of diplomatic relations and strong economic and cultural ties.

“We look to strengthen the sister-city relationship which has seen major developments in business, trade and education. Our relationship to date has been built on a diverse range of initiatives, from environmental and water management, to agriculture, public administration and finance, tourism, education and hospitality training.

“The depth of the ties between these two great cities was demonstrated in 2008 when Canberra was the only Australian city to host the Beijing Olympic Torch relay,” the Chief Minister said.

The StudyCanberra delegation to China promotes the benefits of studying and living in Canberra, and aims to increase Canberra’s share of international students. The delegation includes the ViceChancellors of the University of Canberra and the Australian National University.

The trip includes visits to major universities in Beijing and Shanghai, and meetings with education agents and alumni networks in both cities.

Wait, Beijing is our sister city? I thought that was Nara? Are they both?

Are we allowed two?

Do they know about each other?

Am I letting the cat out of the bag about Canberra’s salacious sister city habits?

Some interesting body language in that picture.

Another politician rort. Expenses paid holiday to China.

Does anyone know what purpose sister cityship serves? There has been exactly zero coverage in the media regarding Beijing and Nara in the last few years.

So was the point of the trip to discuss being able to take a photo that didn’t look like it was taken from a potato?

Well China sure put Katie in her place – she only heads a town council too …

With a population about the same as Australia, Beijing probably shouldn’t be classified in the same league as a town council.

What on Earth was Katie Gallagher doing referring to the Olympic torch relay in a positive light? Thousands of Chinese students were bussed in for those few days for a nationalistic display of Chinese might, remember, to supplement those dwelling locally, and many were objecting with violence and intimidation to legitimate democratic protests centred on the relay. Canberrans witnessed threatening, bullying, violent and REALLY scary behaviour, and the police were completely out of their depth. I was on Anzac Parade and saw those Chinese students intimidating Australian citizens exercising their democratic right to protest. Chinese students who come here need to abide by Australian laws and mores.

Well China sure put Katie in her place – she only heads a town council too …

I hope he had an Australian language translator as opposed to an English language one.

Otherwise, he’ll still be none the wiser.
