Chief Minister Gallagher is drawing attention to the ACT Healthcare Patient Satisfaction Survey:

“The latest satisfaction survey shows that the ACT does have a health care system that the Canberra community is generally satisfied with and I am pleased to see that the latest results are showing anincrease with satisfaction when compared to the last survey period,” the Chief Minister said.

Overall Satisfaction and Help Received show that there has been an increase in overall satisfaction from 80 to 85% and from 80 to 82% for help received since the survey commenced.

The report also shows that 84.7% of patients were satisfied or very satisfied with all aspects of the hospital/health service.

“This detailed survey covers community views about all areas including overall care, rights and respect, quality and safety, participation, conduct of staff and information and communication, since the initial survey was undertaken in 2010,” the Chief Minister said.

So, according to ACT Government surveys:

* Everyone loves their massively high-cost but entirely ineffective climate change schemes;
* Everyone loves the plastic bag ban; and
* Everyone loves the worst healthcare system in the country.

This surprises me…given that in two years going in and out of hospital with a parent I’ve yet to be satisfied with the level of service and I’ve yet to meet another patient or relative of a patient who has told me they are satisfied, let alone ‘very satisfied’. Mostly you find other people like yourself in various stages of resignation.

Would love to know how the survey responses were gathered and whether people could answer anonymously.

Also, it depends on the questions asked as to what a survey will “discover”.

Maybe the people conducting the survey are very good at profiling?

“Katy gets satisfaction”? No issue with that. It was good enough for William Pitt the Younger and Vice-President Aaron Burr.

You can’t just make up figures – there is such a thing as accountability.

Far out – I bet you believe in the Easter Bunny, too.

It surprises me how some people assume the public service is still the way it was in the 50s. You can’t just make up figures – there is such a thing as accountability. Just like you can’t get your brother in law’s development application fast tracked anymore by gifting someone a case of cigars.

The website has not yet been updated with the 2013 survey, but this is the 2012 info: http://www.health.act.gov.au/publications-reports/reports/act-healthcare-survey

“3924 surveys were sent to consumers, 1350 were returned for a 34.4% response rate.” I’m assuming that by ‘consumers’ (weird term for patients?) they mean people who have used the hospital’s services in the past whatever period.

Did you miss the whole saga of the Health Minister having a ‘social’ meeting (in France) with a person from the Hospital who later admitted falsifying figures?

You also seem to have missed the whole Eddie Obeid saga in NSW as well as the somewhat questionable use of call in powers by the previous ACT labor Govt to fast track development, especially when it involved ACT Labor donors.

Whilst I think the Canberra Hospital is pretty good (not perfect), how do the patients who die in hospital take part in the satisfaction survey?

I’m sure that there has been a Health Directorate official that has been designated as their proxy and fills in the forms on their behalf.

Well, they say that doctors are like plumbers…they get to bury their mistakes.

The release doesn’t give the number of respondents, so did she only send it out to friends and family?

Given the history of figure fudging and the fact that Ms Gallagher had her grubby fingers all over it, one must question the veracity of any statistics released on ACT health.

Agreed. They are absoloutely not to be trusted.

Given the length of the waiting lists, could it be that the least satisfied are no longer in a position to be answering surveys?

Personally I had visions of someone looking much like a nurse approaching poor intubated buggers asking if they were happy with the nursing.

Who would say no when so vulnerable?
