Katy seeks to put the past behind her at the Hospital

With an election looming Katy Gallagher has decided it’s time to put the gripes of the past behind us (and more importantly her).

She’s looking to the future at the hospital with the help of a big swag of commonwealth loot.

The release makes for hard reading, but here’s what I think the highlights are:

  • A new Community Health Centre at Gungahlin ($18m),
  • A 16-bed ICU/CCU/HDU facility at Calvary Hospital, a new neurosurgery suite (($5.5m),
  • A mental health precinct ($37.6m),
  • $6.6 million to assist with the costs of constructing two operating theatres at TCH and one at Calvary Public Hospital which will enable the ACT to provide more elective surgery procedures.

Anything new and important that I’ve missed?

I’m just wondering why all these great things are being done now?

Surely not because an election is coming up and katie needs to be seen in a better light than she has been in the past?

Surely not…

gee, you wouldn’t think that these great things are election motivated?
personally, once they are underway, we don’t actually need katy, do we?

What’s all this “birth centre” nonsense? Aren’t the new age doolahs/dulahs all in favour of giving birth in a flowing stream unassisted? Because, you know, that’s how it’s been done for millennia!

It makes sense – the Birth Centre was successful, always booked out, relatively cheap to run and progressive. So they’ve forgotten to include it in their future plans…..

I’ve personally seen the plans they’ve done so far for the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and there is no Birth Centre.

But Friends of the Birth Centre are working hard to make sure that ACT Health, TCH management, and the ACT Government don’t forget about the Birth Centre – 600 babies being born there this year, out of a total 2,500 in TCH. And it would be more if the Birth Centre had more beds and midwives.

“A mental health precinct”

Everything is a precinct with this g_d government. Local shops, no… a lifestyle precinct.
What the heck does a mental health precinct even mean?

A nice tree lined boulevard with shops and modern cuisine catering to the mentally ill.

Does anybody get a faint feeling in the back of their necks that anything to do with Katy and Hospitals is going to end in flying bits of brick ?

wrong Kate.

Staffed by fairies?

Thumper, that’s just the sort of anti-gay Western bourgeoisie attitude that gives this site a bad reputation.

Fairies have feelings too, you know!

I think they are now going to include it (as an afterthought) becuase a lot of people are asking why it isn’t in the plans.

It was not featured in teh plans released of the new women’s and children’s health centre.

And it is certainly not going to be expanded, as Katy said it would be, due to it’s huge success, and the fact that people are queuing up to get in there.

Never ever thought I’d side with the Liberals on anything, but this birth centre business has me very worried. My son was born in the Canberra Hospital birth centre last year and I’m practically evangelical about what a good program and setup they have there.

Trying to find information about whether it is or isn’t going to be included in the new women’s and children’s hospital is very difficult (and I’m usually pretty good with the ol’ Google). I really hope it is included. The ACT Health website is an impenetrable piece of crap. Communicating with the public does not seem to be a strong point.

I thought those had been announced before?

probably were, but they were on the link you provided, they were in the same press release??

They will be staffed by 457 visa holders – as the current facilities are. The biggest organisations putting in applications for 457’s are each state health department.

Nurses from the Philippines are a common sight at TCH at the mo – and why wouldn’t they. Get here and earn 5 times what can be earnt at home and we will just about guarantee a job for life.

Problem solved.

Are all these new facilities self serve, or will they be staffed by robots?

NO mention of the pointless ‘sleep clinic’ that she is spending our health $ on.

And also no mention of the new women’s and children’s hospital, which does not include the birthing centre, despite Katy promising in teh past to expand the birthing centre as most women who would like to give birth there are turned away as it is booked out.

I thought those had been announced before?

how about her children’s area in the ED at TCH?

and this pearl – come stay at the medi hotel….
“A medi-hotel will be established on TCH campus to provide alternative accommodation for patients who don’t need to be admitted but need to be close to the hospital, and our community-based service infrastructure will require major overhaul and expansion.

medi-hotel: isn’t that a hospital?
