Katy to help pregnant teens finish school

By johnboy - 7 August 2012 20

Chief Minister Gallagher is highlighting her work with pregnant teenagers and promising to do more:

If re-elected in 2012, ACT Labor will invest an extra $14.5 million to make sure Canberra’s pregnant or parenting students have the same educational opportunities as other young people.

ACT Labor will fund a new purpose built CC Cares facility at Canberra College (Phillip campus) over the next four years. This funding will provide a facility that will house expanded educational and support facilities for pregnant and parenting students and their children from across Canberra.

Out of interest, what is our education program in schools as relates to sex education ie the bit before you get pregnant.
and yes I know that people can still get pregnant if they are educated.

Mostly depends on the school – science teaches the biological side of things, Health and Physical education teaches sexual health and contraception. When I went through our year 9 class was taught all about the pill, diaphrams and condoms. In the case on the last one they had this banana which the girls had to put a condom on (those classes were single sex).

The US has a system of schools/parenting units for teen parents the segregation of to-be parents and parents means they aren’t slowing down other students and they get 1 on 1 attention and learn parenting skills as well as the core curriculums. Also if the teen parent/16 and pregnant shows on MTV are anything to go by most parents of other students don’t like their kids associating with pregnant/new parent teens.

You really are a moron aren’t you?

What exactly is this facility going to cost the community per hour, in exchange for getting a couple of hundred teenagers up to Year 12 and/or a couple of certificates each?

In the long term, these girls are more likely to be productive members of society and better able to provide for their children, and therefore less of a drain on the community; then they otherwise might be… Let’s face it, there are always going to be girls that get themselves into this situation – might as well help them to be… ahem… productive members of society…

What Percentage of teen mums actually go on to get a job?

How many will be encouraged to have unprotected sex with this new $15 million safety net.

Oh whats in it for the fathers of these children?
Most likely the fathers would have gone to the same schools.. but how does it make it easier for them if the mothers are now attending a different school/what if they’re in gunners are they going to travel halfway across town, i just dont see it happening.

Four years. FOUR. Seriously? To build a facility for pregnant and parenting teens? Based on a model that has proven itself at the other campis, so she has evidence of success? Is she hand building it using mudbricks she makes from mud sourced from Phillip oval?

If you are going to go all Latin plurals it should be “campi” but the accepted Englishes is campuses. I just had to be that guy, wouldn’t want my classics degree to go to waste.

Are you a fungi?

I’m in favour of keeping pregnant teens in the education system – but adjust the mainstream one please. A $15 million “state-of-the-art” education facility, Katie is promising, with dedicated free healthcare (probably dental as well), free counselling, subsidised meals, and free childcare (presumably allowing for childcare for study time as well as class time). Hardly a disincentive for teen pregnancies. What on earth are they thinking? It begs the question, what does “state-of-the-art” mean when applied to this non-specialist field? Why the expense? It’s just standard TAFE and school education plus childcare. What exactly is this facility going to cost the community per hour, in exchange for getting a couple of hundred teenagers up to Year 12 and/or a couple of certificates each? My guess is, with the professional attention costs taken into account, at least $50,000 per year, per mother, all gratis. Meanwhile, our kids rack up massive HECS debts …

So will this
“make sure Canberra’s pregnant or parenting students have the same educational opportunities as other young people.”
Or
Make sure Canberra’s young students have the same getting pregnant or parenting opportunities as middle aged people. Where is the incentive to actually get yourself into a position to provide(and actually help the community rather than just draw on it) for the kids before having them.

How many young kids will simply want to get pregnant to be at the same school as their best friend of whom is also pregnant. Having pregnant mothers at the regular schools not only teaches the mother a valuable lession but also the other students that think that becomeing a parent is just about fitting in at school.

The biggest earner in australia is mining.. the 2nd is single parent welfare.

What a waste of money. Surely chastity belts for all female students between Years 7 to 12 would be a better way to spend $14 mill?

This has been on the books for a while. $1.4M for design funding in current budget. Tenders for Architect closed late May 2012. Construction tenders are anticipated to be invited Mid 2013.

Fantastic initiative.

Is there an election coming up? Do they save their good ideas for years so they can be released just prior to an election?

Still, great idea and not to soon, however, the cost is a bit of a surprise I must say.

Excellent program, but why not give a decent re-furb to the current class rooms at stirling? would be cheaper and quicker.
