No, calm down, Jon Stanhope remains Chief Minister.

But his deputy has announced that she’s kicked off construction of the long awaited Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“I am very pleased to be able to turn the first sod and to officially get things underway on what will be a world class facility for women, children and their families from Canberra and the surrounding region,” Ms Gallagher said.

Over the past few weeks construction site fences have been installed to establish and secure the construction site. Site sheds and facilities have been put in place in readiness for the construction to begin.

Ms Gallagher joined staff, stakeholders and representatives of the project team to celebrate the important milestone. The new hospital will be built surrounding the existing Maternity building at the northern end of the Canberra Hospital campus.

(And good luck with the parking to our health worker readers)

Once upon a time, I used to admire Katy.

Now, she is more arrogant and out of touch with reality as Stanhopeless.

The way in which she has managed the redevelopment and parking at TCH is absolutely appalling. The excuses she rolls out shows that she has no understanding, or empathy, with patients, families and residents around the hospital.

She is a disgrace as Health Minister and, despite my earlier positive opinion, she has shown herself to be unfit to move into the chieflinesses office.

Let me guess – she should be replaced by a Green?

When are they going to open a men’s hospital?

It’s called ‘the pub’ – good for what ails ya.

At long last, the new hospital is needed, how many babies are flown to Sydney for specialised treatment, this long overdue, women do need the hospital for specialised treatment also.

If we want to play on those stereotypes with no real value, why not claim that men need a hospital that treats trauma, as men are more often involved in trauma than women? I swear everytime Im in ED, theres some old guy there whos just cut his fingers off with a powersaw or crashed his dirt bike on a saturday arvo. People within the health system are always saying men dont seek medical help as much as they should (where women do)..

aybe part of the reason for this, is that were in a society which believes that adult men shouldnt need the same targetted healthcare as women, so therefore men dont seek it out, and society sees there is ‘no need’.

I’m with you Leinna #10

Hospitals are for the sick. Mothers giving birth aren’t sick. Why do they need a Hospital? Build a birthing facility, and call it that, if there’s sufficient demand for centralising the process. Just don’t berate mens health by building a non-hospital for women and calling it a hospital.

Men do not, as a rule, need admission for a normal part of life (giving birth). Women do. The only special thing men get are prostate problems (and otherwise rare external genitalia problems). You don’t need a hospital for prostates. That would be really dull.

Children usually have their own set of medical problems, and it’s usually important to keep them away from the rest of the hospital denizens for their own safety.

The worst part is the car parking, which is a complete and utter failure.

The day you’re giving birth I’ll build you one myself.

After yesterday’s massive Indian food lunch, coupled with a big roast dinner last night, I felt like I was giving birth this morning. I’ll have my hospital in the back yard, thanks.

Pffft, you didnt actually think that equal rights actually meant ‘equal’, did you? On a serious note, will this mean that money previously spent on maternity and breast screening at Canberra Hospital, will be redirected to mens health?

To put another way, with the addition of a health facility to the ACT, to treat one half of the population, will the appropriate additional funding be made available? Or will the ACT hospital budget simply be stretched to cover an additional facility which only caters to half the population? Why dont we have a seniors hospital, which only provides services for those over 50. Do you think the younger generation would be happy enough to sacrifice health funding, for services they would never be able to use?

Are they building a Men’s Hospital after the Women’s and Children’s Hospital is complete?

What is the definition of “children” for treatment purposes?

If my mum was still alive (aged 83) and she took me there, would I get treated ? After all, I am her child…

Will they save money by not installing urinals?

Not thrilled.
